Try to power it on while watching fans
by Steven Haninger / July 3, 2010 10:22 AM PDT

If they twitch and then stop, the PS tried to start but detected a load problem and shut down. If this happens, it's most likely the power supply but more troubleshooting would be needed to confirm this. Check for fan movement when attempting to power it up and report back with what you see. The PS is probably the most likely suspect. Bad MB capacitors on some units are said to be notorious for this problem as well. A visual inspection of these is easy enough as they may be bulging or leaking.

Any beeps or evidence of hard drive activity?
by Steven Haninger / July 6, 2010 7:05 PM PDT

If the machine appears to go through a normal boot process such as LEDs for the HD or floppy drive light up as usual, you probably have a bad monitor. If no such activity exists, it's back to troubleshooting. It could be a component failure or just a bad connection somewhere. If you had a DVM and could check voltages coming from the PS that would be good.

The monitor is ok I recently took it to a friends house to try it out on his monitor and it didn't work, The monitor still stayed blank and the fan stayed on and no it didn't beep.

If it isn't the monitor ...
by Kees Bakker / July 7, 2010 4:12 AM PDT

the next guess is the video card. Then the motherboard.

I'd start with trying another video card. If there's none, because it's integrated on the motherboard, the next step is to replace that.

It may be poor wording on your part but it sounds like the monitor doesn't work? You tried it on a friend's monitor? (did you mean PC?)and it still stayed blank. What makes you think the monitor is OK?

what I was trying to say was that the computer still didn't work on my friends monitor, i was trying to test out if my monitor didn't work by testing it out on his because if it worked perfectly on his monitor that would mean mine was broken

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
