Need help with a virus...

Jun 6, 2007 2:58AM PDT

I currently have a virus(es) that is proving difficult to get rid of. Any attempt to run a virus scan (tried using Panda and Adaware as well as an online scanner through F-Secure) usually ends up in the computer abruptly shutting off. Tried running the scanners in safe mode with the same result. Any suggestions?

More info..

Oh, some more info...aside from shutting the computer off all that really happens is a ton of pop-ups and the computer seems to be running quite a bit slower. Not 100% sure of the origin of the infection...I'm pretty sure a co-worker is responsible for it.

System restore ...

might be helpful. Maybe the virus isn't activated then anymore. That gives you much better chances to delete it.

Give this a shot.

Try it in normal mode and then safe mode.
Read that item about system restore files.

If your bug is smart it will nail stinger right out of the chute.
So maybe a rename of the stinger.exe file might help.

How Do You Know It's A Virus...?

Has any virus scanner identified malware on your computer yet? Have you run antispyware tools as well? It sounds as if the problem could be heat related as well. Have you taken the cover off the computer and used compressed air to blow out all the dust and junk from around the processor, heat sink, power supply, and all the fans? Have you eliminated all the unnecessary startup programs and services so conflicting programs aren't causing issues? Have you tried running Chkdsk?

How To Run 'Error Checking/Chkdsk' On Win2000/XP

Just a suggestion to see if it will scan all the way through. Click on either, or both of the links below and run the free ONLINE scans they provide:

Housecall Online Scanner

Panda Online Scanner

Hope this helps.
