Resolved Question

Need help with a gaming laptop! At my wits end.

Aug 2, 2014 8:43AM PDT

I've been searching non-stop for a gaming laptop for the past two weeks and am about to break down with a huge headache. I finally settled with this one:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8992872

until it suddenly went on backorder and won't arrive by the time I need it. Could someone help me with finding another laptop with similar or better specs for preferably $1,000, at most $1,200? After I saw this one, it was hard to find anything that impressed me.

I was hoping for at least 3GB of GPU memory, but only saw a lot of 2GBs. I can settle with 2GB, but it was difficult looking for something with 2GB that presented at least one benefit compared to my original order (i.e. price, CPU, GPU).

If anyone has a recommendation, please, please post. I feel like I might randomly pick one with not that great of a quality:price value by myself anymore. I'm also OK with laptop + part purchases if it comes to that.

I'm looking to play Bioshock Infinite or Metro Last Light with a not annoying fps. I understand that might be difficult under $1,000 or $1,200, but I'm crossing my fingers that a laptop with a discount is out there somewhere.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Did you look at it's cousin y510p?

I see you went for more GPU which is nice but the office picked up the y510p dual sli 16GB 1TB unit off amazon for 1099 (plus taxes) and my feeling is the second GPU is more than what most need. Gamers that disagree should be back on desktops IMO.

Can't find that for the price

First off, I really appreciate the reply! I was always under the impression that I wouldn't be able to afford a laptop with two GPUs, so the Y510p became a really likely option. However, I couldn't find one with 16GB RAM on Amazon at that price; I only saw 8GB for $1,081 and 16GB for $1,299. I would have appreciated the larger RAM space but I guess 8GB would suffice.

I'm going to do another search with SLI and decide on either Y510p or something else. I hope I'm allowed to keep this open so I can ask of the quality of the purchase candidates.

Quality?

Asking the wrong person I fear. Today's laptops for the most part are a few year affair. Where's the quality when they fit a battery with a 300 cycle rating? Folk have been known to try running on battery power and wearing that out in a year. There's also the issue of reduced life spans as we cram all this into a small space. While that meets a demand, I doubt we can call that a good quality.

Oops, not quality.

I admit my poor word choice. (Relative) Suitability to my needs (gaming), perhaps? My current laptop died, so I need a new one that'll survive through the rest of college. I understand the benefits of a desktop, but I can't afford both a laptop and a desktop; I'd rarely be able to use the latter to make the purchase worthwhile.

I think I might settle with this one since the SSD is pretty enticing:

Could you give me a last tip as to whether it's yay or nay?

Iffy as to the ATI choice.

There are some games are waiting for ATI to issue new drivers. Very low frame rates. That was a month ago so while this is a gamer laptop, I can't tell how leading edge you must be.

The rest is OK, similar to the y510p.
