Need help with 10 years of procrastination

by Aldirtan / January 24, 2009 4:56 AM PST

Hi all ..

long story short : I have several years worth of camcorder tapes (miniDV) , as well as quite a collection of VHS tapes , ALL of which I want to convert to disc.

Any advice on my best route ? should I firewire into my cpu and use windows movie maker ? my cpu is an intel Q6600 2.4GHz ,Nvidia 8800gts, and a pioneer DVR-212D DVD-RW

what kind of discs do I need ? DVD +r/w ?

What do I do with the VHS tapes ? try to convert to disc thru cpu ? or do those DVD/VCR combo's work ? ( one touch dubbing etc )

I dont even know where to begin .

any help is appreciated ..

thank you

What I do...

For VHS tapes: Play this on a VHS player connected to a DVD player/recorder

For MiniDV- if you have a DVD player/Recorder with Firewire, connect and with the camcorder in play mode, just record with the DVD recorder. Otherwise, use the AV cables.

For both: while played on a TV, record via the TV output....

Of course, if you want to make your miniDV clips into a proper movie(i.e. edit) then you need to do it via your computer ....

how do I transfer "movie" from cpu to a disc ?

ok ..

I also understand that windows movie maker does NOT write to dvd - just cd ..

If I am transferring my tapes to my cpu to edit/make movies .. what do I need to be able to write them to DVD or perhaps Blu Ray ??

Do I need a new writer ? what kind of discs are normally used to write home vide to ? DVD or Blu ray ?

thanks for the advice so far

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
