Question

Need Help Upgrading CPU

Apr 18, 2019 2:22PM PDT

#1
Hello, I'm looking for a new CPU to pair with GTX 1060 6GB. Currently I have i5-4430 and its bottlenecking this GPU.
I'm thinking about i5-9400F or AMD Ryzen 5 2600X, (if you think there are better choices let me know).
Also to make any of these CPU's work I'd need a new motherboard too because the one I currently have has this old LGA1150 socket and only supports DDR3 RAM which means that I'll need new DDR4 ram too.

What I'm asking you is to help me choose a new CPU/Motherboard/RAM which together would not exceed 350€ as I currently can't spend more than that.

My current setup:
GTX 1060 6GB
16GB RAM
i5-4430 @ 3.00
250GB SSD / 1TB HDD
Asus B85M-G

Clarification Request
How did you test for this bottleneck?
Apr 18, 2019 2:46PM PDT

I ran some tests on a very dated C2Q with DDR2 and the results weren't much better on newer CPUs.

What game was this?

Is the current RAM in dual channel mode?

Is there a Seagate drive in the mix?
If so, what do the smart values 01 and 07 report?

As to shopping boards, I'm not in your country so I can't do concierge service for you.

Also, looking the CPU load is not how to determine if there is a bottleneck.

RAM is x4 4GB (have a look at this) https://gyazo.com/2373593d0c7f28abf5f114627c5d0132

I've talked to many people and they all told me that the next thing I should upgrade is CPU, it may not be a bottleneck but it's a pretty weak CPU for sure, for example my friend which has 8GB RAM GTX 950 2GB and a I5-6500 has way steadier FPS on games like Rust and doesn't get as much fps drops as I do ,

It's not busted, it just doesnt work if you click on it, please copy it manually and then paste it, thats what I did with the links you've posted. For some reason they work this way.

The mobo temp could be a false reading.
What does the bios show for mobo temp?

Your hdd is showing some errors.
Look at the value of smart 01.
It's not bad and could be a slow build up over the 3 yrs you have had it.
Just keep an eye on it and if the number keeps going up you will need to do something.

Some games lean heavy on the cpu.
If you run one of those games you will need more muscle.

Motherboard temperature
Apr 18, 2019 4:04PM PDT

it shows that motherboard is at 120 °C, but it really isnt. There's no way that temperature is 120 °C because even after turning my pc on it still shows the same

That area can be hit and miss.

But I'm not getting answers to my question above. Stable FPS is not how to determine there is a bottleneck. Same for CPU load during games.

Somewhere about the i5-2500 we could push a trio of GPUs with just one lone i5. Your i5 is much better than then.

PS. Been thinking why the other machine has a stable FPS.
Apr 18, 2019 6:41PM PDT

My bet is the CPU and GPU on that (one or both) is topped out and can't do any better. Or they know how to adjust settings for steady or better FPS.

When I have a game I can cap to 60 FPS I do that since any more is a waste since my display is only 60Hz.

If you feel it's a cpu problem shop for an I7 4790/4790k.
No mobo swap needed.
If you go down that road get the latest bios before the swap.

Side note....you have the wrong ram for best perf.
What you want is 1600 not 1333.

Do post that speccy that has been asked for.

I think it's about time to upgrade my Mobo anyway ,same goes with RAM so I can ban safe with future upgrades. Dont think it's worth buying I7-4790/K even if I find a used one, just because I'll need to change my mobo/ram in the future anyway

Also.. I just can't publish a speccy link, every link it generates it just wont work it says service unavailabe.

The OP is using w10.
Msft keeps a data base of what mobo is tied to the w10 install.
Reinstall w10 on a different mobo and it may not activate.
You might be able to get a free key from msft otherwise you will need to buy it.

Here's my worry.
Apr 19, 2019 9:13AM PDT

I've seen folk upgrade and end up with nearly the same performance issues they were complaining about.

Above I wrote more about STABLE FPS and shared that in today's gamer PCs we don't get that unless we have ample GPU power and can cap the frame rate.

As to the Speccy the one you produced looked OK to me. It had the information I needed to get an idea of your current PC and check for things I know about.

new mb new os

you can only use the original os if you replace with the exact same motherboard. If you are using this as an excuse to upgrade with a different motherboard, it is considered a different computer.

Thank you guys for helping me out. From reading all of your suggestions, I think I'll wait for those new Ryzen CPU's to come out and see what happens. For now I'll either wont upgrade anything or get an used 4790/4790K although I'm not sure if I want to buy something used as I don't trust it will work properly.

Go the new 4790 route with the proper ram and your out about 350 bucks.

Go the new mobo route and your out about 600+ bucks.

Your call.

As CPUs get "out of circulation"

I have used Amazon to pick up recycled CPUs for not much and all was well. I get them there because they were too much new or just not available.

Apr 19, 2019 7:59PM PDT

A few years ago had a gaming PC with similar issue as yours. Long story short, my 3 or 4 year-old power supply was "sagging" under load. Replaced it with a similar watt rating model from Seasonic. Problem solved.

Good point; no mention of PS in OP. They are not expensive, go for a 1200W modular to be future proof.
I have always used Corsair, although there are reliable alternatives.
