Need help uninstalling McAfee Internet Security Suite 2008

Oct 28, 2008 9:15AM PDT

Hi All,

I am using a Toshiba Satellite laptop with Windows XP. I had McAfee Internet Security Suite 2008 and was really happy with it, but several weeks ago, a message from McAfee kept popping up, saying that there had been an error when it was trying to download updates. I followed McAfee's suggestions and started to uninstall the product in order to reinstall it.

When I went to reinstall it (and download the product from the McAfee website)I found out that because I am currently in Syria and, as a result of trade sanctions between the US and Syria, I am unable to download ANY McAfee products from my computer, including the MCPR.exe tool and do not have a McAfee CD here with me. After three online chats with McAfee techs, the last one told me that when I could lift the sanctions, he could help me. Until then, I was out of luck.

I then decided to get Kaspersky, which is available here in Syria, but when I've tried to install it, I've received repeated error warnings that McAfee is still in my system somehow.

Thus far, to uninstall McAfee, I have:

1. Used the Add/Remove program
2. Checked my registry, looking for McAfee-related files...didn't find anything

Another possible option I have is traveling to Jordan or Lebanon to get a McAfee CD...but that's worst case scenario...I hope!

I'm not a technically saavy person, but I have patience and can follow directions...Can anyone please help me? I would be indebted.

Thanks,

Dania

Great!

Hey Grif,

Thank you...I'm working on my registry as I type and clearly, when I did my registry before, I didn't know what I was doing. Your instructions are great!

One quick question: How will I know if a file is McAfee related or not? Am I simply looking for "McAfee" listed somewhere in the "data" section? This is probably pretty obvious, but just want to check....

Thanks again,
Dania

As Listed In Those Instructions...

First, make sure you create a backup of the registry BEFORE making any of those deletions, then remove the items listed...

As to "knowing" whether its' related to McAfee, there's no sure way unless you see it on the list I created.. And unfortunately, the registry cleanup I posted is a fairly old item.. I'm sure there are a few new files that it may not have listed.. That's why the best way to remove new retail programs is to use the MCPR.exe file.. Unfortunately, if you can't use it, you're out of luck.

Hope this helps.

Just to check

Hey Again Grif,

Thanks for your help. I made a back up before I deleted any files, so no worries there.

I know you said that your list will help me figure out whether something is McAfee or not, but I guess I am confused. Can I assume that if I run the key words on the list that any files that come up should be deleted?

Thus far, I've run all the keywords but only deleted files that were clearly marked McAfee in some way. There were probably about 20 other files that came that didn't say McAfee, but came up when I ran the search for the keywords you offered. I restarted my computer and then tried to install Kaspersky and still was unable because Kaspersky is detecting McAfee.

If my next step is to go back and delete the 20 other files that I left, I assume I will create another backup first, then delete the files. But what if I end up wanting to backup all the way back to the original state of my registry before I deleted even the McAfee files. I'm not even sure I will want to do that, but I guess just I want to check before I do anything drastic.

Also, if I delete the 20 other files and I still can't install Kaspersky, what will my next step be?

Thanks Grif,

Dania

Lots Of McAfee Files Don't Say McAfee..

Some may indicate "Network Associates", some may not have any reference to either listing.. Do the best you can using those file cleanup instructions..

And if when you're done, you can always use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility in the link below.. Install it, then run it, and remove any other items that are listed as McAfee related. There are also other tools such a CCleaner which might be able to help find any remnants.

As to restoring the registry back to it's original condition, if you run the original backup, it will perform those steps for you.. Because you created it before any changes were made, restoring it back will take you back to that state. I'm not sure how you created your backup but this is how I create a registry backup for such situations:

Click on Start-Run. When the box opens type in "regedit" (without the quotes). Click Ok. When the Registry Editor window opens, click on the "My Computer" entry so it is highlighted. Next, click on "Registry" in the upper left corner of the window, ("File" in Windows 2000/XP) choose "Export Registry File" (or "Export" in Windows 2000/XP). When the next window opens, be sure of the location where you are saving it to (I direct it to my desktop for easy access) and give the file a name like Backup. Click "Save". You now have a backup registry that can be double clicked and will replace the new one you?re going to make, IF you make any deletions you don't like..

Hope this helps.

Dania. I have spoken to 3 "experts" and all say it is not advisable to download the removal tool without the security of virus protection.
So,how to do it? God knows!! I'm taking my Toshiba back to the retailer and mentally preparing myself for an exchange of words.

I know this doesn't help you,but at least you now know you are not alone!

Best wishes.

Chesnara.
