Need Help Understanding Upscaling Throuhg My AV Reciever

Oct 6, 2008 7:22PM PDT

i have a yamaha rx v-663. cnet says it upscales analog to 480p. but i was wondering if i have an hdtv with 1080p does my hdtv trump my av receiver or vice versa. i have the cable box, ps3 and tv connected to my receiver with my Onkyo SKS-HT240 speakers running to my av receiver and my ps3 only with opitcal digital cables. i don't have an hdtv yet as i'm currently shopping but this whole upscaling is confusing. i was trying to get an yamaha rx v-863. cnet says this does 1080p upscaling but cnet says theres no use getting it since the hdtv would do the upscaling. plus cnet likes the 663 model better then the 863. heres a link with cnets notes and comparison with the two models. oh and is upscaling done automatically or what. and yea i'm a newbie to this tech mess as you can already tell. i tried reading David Katzmaie definition to how upscaling works but can't seem to help with my dilemma.

Sometimes the HDTV does a superior job (up)scaling

YMMV. It can often be trial and error, depending on the equipment involved, and that's even w/o taking into consideration the wide variety of sources you might be throwing at your various components (one SD or HD feed vs another). Some of what 'looks best' is most certainly in the eye of the beholder. There's no simple solution here which does not involve you testing it out in person based on how you want your system to function. And you don't even have the HDTV yet(?) Sad.

especially for SD TV programming. DVDs you have a chance in hell, but even then. Nicer chip sets for deinterlacing/upscaling include Reon, Realta, and Anchor Bay. Its not just the chips chosen however, its also the implementation. Faroudja is known to suffer more macroblocking than the others, which is often found in more affordable receivers.

Its the deinterlacing that is a lot trickier than upscaling. For the first is getting separate frames, from separate points in time, as one.

the 663 is very often recommended over the 863 due to value, as their amp section is very comparable, if not identical. IOW, you are paying significantly more for bells and whistles that you might not need. Dont ask me what they are, for I dont know.

Dont purchase your receiver in terms of PQ. Buy the TV with that in mind. Buy the receiver, AFTER you bought speakers, and then you will have an idea of how much amp you will need considering the physical nature of your room, dimensions, and characteristcs of speakers chosen.
