Question

Need help understanding itunes 11.3 as relates to libraries

Jul 30, 2014 3:55AM PDT

Hi. I have a mac powerbook with os 10.6.8. Itunes version 11.3 (54) is installed. I'm having a heck of a time understanding how to work with the libraries.

I have always had two itunes libraries on my mac. One for an iphone and the other for an ipod. In the past, I've been able to go into one library and do a variety of things (such as purchase music) and not have it affect the other library. In addition, I've been able to move one song or multiple songs between libraries - whether they were purchased or just uploaded off a cd.

My problem now (after installing this current itunes version) is that I can't tell what is going on! Sometimes when I purchase a song in one of the libraries it ends up in both - but not always. I can't figure out how to move songs between libraries and I can't understand why sometimes some of the songs from one library ends up in the other. I'm nervous that if I delete some of the songs out of one library, the same songs will delete out of the other.

Can someone please explain how to work with multiple libraries on the same computer?

Thanks!

Clarification Request
Are you trying to do this in iTunes alone?

If I look around I see ways to sync iTunes libraries so I am left to guess you have some demands. That is, iTunes alone must do this, that and polish the car too?

No, I'm not trying to upset you but seeing if you looked into library sync tools.

Same Problem

I too am having the same problem with iTunes on my Windows Desktop Computer. It's really very frustrating. I've been trying to search the web for possible solutions, but no luck yet. If anyone on this thread knows how to resolve this issue, please let me know - your help is appreciated.

As for iTunes, not sure where Apple is going with this. The past couple updates have been pretty lame, and it's actually getting even worse with each update. Hope they get their stuff together.

Why bother with two libraries?

Seems like an unnecessarily complicated arrangement, but if it worked for you, that's fine.

Personally I would go with one library and two playlists.
One for the iPod and one for the iPhone.

That way you only have to be concerned with one library, everything goes into it and is distributed via the relevant playlist.

It's the way I differentiate between my iPhone/iPad/Wife's iPod#1/Wife's iPod #2

why bother with two libraries?

because we both have many, many playlists in our libraries and have different games and softwares all which update through itunes. they need to be separate.

so frustrating that there is never an answer to this problem every time I post. Not loving apple the way I did in the past.

So you mean that you not only have two libraries,

but two different accounts at the iTunes/App Store?

Unfortunately, Apple states that you cannot, and have never been able to, merge two accounts together, which would make the one library solution viable.

One thing you might try is to reauthorize all the iDevices on both the accounts and then authorize the required ones again when prompted.
I suspect that the reason some tracks/apps appear in both has something to do with the authorization process.

Just a thought
