JPEGs and such do that when the file was partially recovered. You are not doomed but the files are gone and this is all that's left.
It's too late to get going on backups but this is how most folk learn why so many write to backup what they can't lose.

Had a hardware problem with my laptop so sent it back to PC World to get repaired, they ended up wiping the whole thing (I know I should have had some sort of backup but I didnt) so I sent it back again and they recovered my files (photos, word docs etc) on a USB, I can access my photos but cant see them as about 4/5s of every photo is missing. It's literally a folder of file signatures and are all named along the lines of "Found_204de1b000-9e5". Is there anyway I can recover these so I can actually see my photos or am I doomed?
