Need help troubleshooting ... save me please

Dec 31, 2014 3:23AM PST

Symptoms:

Motherboard lights are on yet the machine refuses to post.

8 / 22 pin connectors firmly connected, tried different ram slots also one stick, cpu is 100% seated correctly.

Computer spec:

i7 4790
asus maximus hero 7
corsair vengeance red 2400 2x8gb
2 x asus strix 970 gtx
corsair rm1000
nzxt phantom 820

So this is a new build that i've been in utter agony with over the past three weeks, i've had shipping delays and i "assumed" my first motherboard had fried so i bought a new motherboard / cpu / ram (i had a first gen i7, g1 guerrilla, triple channel ram), so it seemed logical just to update everything seeing as i just bought two 970 gtx's.

The reason i assumed it was orignally my other motherboard is because i had the PSU tested in a shop (granted, i live in China, so i don't know how well that can be trusted), i watched him plug it into a test bench and it posted. ALSO when i recieved my new components, tonight, new years ... i breadboarded the machine and i watched it post ... As soon as i assembled in my machine and went to post, boom ... exactly the same issue i had with my previous motherboard.

Help me please ... it's killing me, i want to toss it all out of the windows, i recently bought a asus swift monitor and the two 970's ... i've been aching to use it all for nearlly a month now.

So how about without the nzxt phantom 820?

When it won't post in the case I'm out of the case on cardboard. So get out of the case AGAIN then when that works look for the most common gaffes which are

1. No standoff posts.
2. Too many standoff posts.
3. Connecting front panel connections BEFORE we check out if it posts in the case.

Tried :(

Thats the problem, i disassembled and bread boarded the machine again outside of the case, and i can't get it too post.

...

I also i checked the stand offs, only the the 9 i need installed.

The maximus mother board comes with a built in power button on the board, doesnt post or give any reaction when pressed now, it did before.

Then start reducing parts.
Dec 31, 2014 3:34AM PST

To post I need about 3 parts. And by post I mean just a power up. If the PSU and motherboard won't power up, one or both are bad.

To get a video post, a few more parts. Sometimes you find new builders sticking in more than one stick of ram or using a video card when there is onboard video. Don't need those yet.

I wish i could get it to post, the motherboard i recieved about 6 hours ago and it posted when i orignally breadboarded it. The psu is a few months old and i travelled from England to China with it, but i assume its ok ... because it posted the test bench in the shop and posted my machine origanlly tonight when i breadboarded the first time. Also i tried an older psu to try and post with, although im unsure on thee wattage and it only had a 4 pin connector for the psu and not an 8 pin. I got no post from the other psu, but im praying thats because its only a 4 pin connector for the cpu.

oops
Dec 31, 2014 3:41AM PST

i forgot to mention i've tried the bare minimum, just cpu / psu / mobo ... i have the maximus 7 and it has the digital error code in the top right, i get nothing from it, i get nothing from any of it other than the led's lighting up on the board.

It seem to me you know what you are doing,
Dec 31, 2014 6:12AM PST

maybe you are just unlucky. The mobo could be fried now. PSU do have protective circuit so I would think that's not the boy here or at least my last suspect. If the mobo did fried then I guess you will have analyze as to why that happen. Good luck.

8 pin not absolutely necessary
Dec 31, 2014 4:00AM PST

even if 8 socket on the motherboard, it will work with just a 4 pin power plug into it.

changes in voltages from England to China?
Dec 31, 2014 4:02AM PST

Is that all accounted for by you?

220 in China, 230 in England. Will that be an issue?

- Collapse -
probably not
Dec 31, 2014 4:27AM PST

cycles difference is usually from 50 to 60 Hz if there's any difference on that, but not likely if the voltages ar e that close. It was 220v when I was in Greece, 110v here in USA, a big difference.

anyone?

Anyone at all had a simular problem or know how to remedy this?

My 2 Grandson have the same problem.
Dec 31, 2014 8:25AM PST

I gave them each a computer to build for Xmas. and I test them before I gave it to them. The bad news was..."Grandpa, the computer has no display and the other says the thing is smoking". Needless to say, both need motherboard now but they have not put it together yet. So can't tell you if that's the solution or not.
