Need Help transferring songs from 30GB to 4GB Nano (WinXP)

Jan 8, 2006 11:37AM PST

Bought my girlfriend a 4GB Nano for Xmas.
We both have Windows XP and USB 2.0 ports.
I initialized her Nano on her PC.
Of course, my 30GB was initialized on my PC.
Is it technically possible to transfer some songs from my iTunes library to her Nano? When I connect her Nano to my PC, my PC won't recognize the hardware(her Nano)

(looking back, maybe there are 2 questions - getting my PC to recognize her Nano and tranferring songs from on iPod to another)

Thank you.

No. It's part of the plan to copy protect content AKA DRM.

You will know how this works very soon.

what does that mean?

What does it mean that I ''will know shortly...''
I'm a little tech-naive. I'm definitely an eejit.

I understand that massive online "sharing" is illegal.
But sharing purchased songs from my library with my girlfriend is illegal too?

Isn't sharing songs with my girlfriend similar to making her a mixed CD? Or, is that illegal too?

I really don't understand the legal aspects of any of this. I always thought it was about commercial use vs. personal use and then it became about massive online abuse.

Does that mean that the only way to transfer songs from my iPod to her Nano is to copy my CD collection onto her PC/iTunes? (even though that may not be legal too. is/isn't it?)

There isn't any way to do it directly from my PC/music library to her iPod? Is that really the only way to do it? What if I bought a new Nano for myself?
Is it not possible to transfer files from one iPod to another?

All of the music I have on my iPod has been purchased -mostly CDs, only a few iTunes songs - not a single ''free'' MP3.

Thank you

I won't re-interpet what Apple has done here. But if they opened the door to boy and girl friends, that would leave a gaping hole in their DRM and then we would have nothing to write about here.

Again, I will not dive into copyright law or anything near that, but you have the physical CDs so re-ripping is possible. You'll have to ask elsewhere as to legal or not but at least that will work.

In closing, without DRM the iPod would be mired in the courts and there would be no iTunes.

Most of DRM is aimed at people who want to give a free copy

of their music to a friend or relative. That's illegal.

The exceptions...

There's actually a way to backup and even share your music with a close friend or two without it being an illegal act. For information about the exceptions, click here for the Cnet Insider secrets.

Hope this helps,
