need help to restore ipod library to deleted itunes

Jan 8, 2007 9:35PM PST

I inadvertantly wiped out my son's G5 desktop... including around 5000 songs in his itunes. His ipod obviously now contains all these songs and if he connects to his now empty itunes all will be lost.
Mac said there is "un supported software available that will solve this problem.
Any suggestions as to which one is the best to solve this issue so I can at least have the songs bac?
Thanks

restore itunes

Believe me it is not something I am proud of doing.
Thank you for the help. I wanted to make sure I do not screw things up worse by downloading software that is problematic. These should do the trick.

If the account was deleted
Jan 9, 2007 7:59AM PST

then it normally resides in the "Deleted Accounts" folder. However, if you clicked the 'Trash this because I think I thought I knew that everything would be alright" button, it will have just gone Phooof!
But, if you did that, it "could" still be in the trash can.

I don't want to make you feel any worse than you do, but, what were you doing to get rid of the entire account?

erasing tha account
Jan 9, 2007 9:11PM PST

long story... the machine all of a sudden had trouble starting. I re installed the 2 install discs and made it a little better but still something was very wrong so I ran a hardware test disc that came with the unit. It showed an error in mass storage so I got apple care involved. They immediately said they will send a new hard drive overnight which came yesterday and I wil install today.
This is when I took the stupid pill. I go ahead and try once again to revitalize this unit so I can dump all existing files on an external. I must have hit the "do not archive" or "erase" when I did this install. The machine came back to life, boots on and off normally, connects to the internet etc but all the info is gone!
I hit the wrong button on the last install.
Apple care said to try and find the files in I believe "previous Files" somewhere but it looks hopeless. That why I at least have his ipod with tons of songs on it and needed help in restoring them on his "new" machine.
Hey if you have any suggestion I welcome them. Thanks

Ahh, that makes sense

Instead of the Archive and Install option, which would have left all your data intact, you hit the other one.
If you can find a Previous System folder, take a look inside. You are looking for the Users folder. If it is there, there should be lots of useful data.

Is the replacement HD installed or just sitting in its box?

i give up
Jan 10, 2007 11:29AM PST

it was in its box until about 10 minutes ago. I thiught it would be a good idea to install it together. it went really well till i disconnected the small tiny wire in the rear of it and one of the 4 wires came out of its house. we carefully put it back in and simply put it back together... no problem except now it is completely dead. I could get this aggravation with my old PC.
I pay for apple care. they need to fix this not me. Another wasted hour tomorrow on the phone with them I am dreading...

Problems
Jan 10, 2007 10:26PM PST

I'm trying to visualize what "small tiny wire" would be on the rear of the replacement Hard Drive. There should not be any wires there at all.
On the old one, while it is still inside the computer, there are two connections. One for power (four small wires going into a molex plug) and the other for data(cable, usually blue ending in a plastic plug). None of these could be described as tiny.
If you tried to pull the power connector out by pulling on the wires, you may have disconnected one of the power leads.;
However, your statement that the machine is completely dead does not sound like you did any of that. This machine will boot, or attempt to, without a HD being installed.
Will be interesting to hear what Apple Support has to say.

iTunes Library Vanished
May 5, 2008 1:03PM PDT

On mine the other day.
I have no idea what occurred.
Yesterday it was fine, today empty.
I only had 800 tunes, but I had so many notes as to what tunes were for certain iMove clips.

All I could find was original saved tunes folder from external drive.
The only thing I can think of is possibly falling asleep with remote took over the delete mission.
I can never figure out how to restore the star rating to all of them.
I hit every related itunes folder, and nothing happens dragging them over to iTunes.

Apples help menu doesn't give you much to go on.

Cheers, and hope your mission goes well.

itunes library backup
May 9, 2008 1:45PM PDT

I find it very helpful to use my .mac account and I regularly sync my computers and backup data including itunes songs and configurations along with iphoto, emails and bookmarks using .mac so that if I did accidentally delete my itunes and paid for songs, I would just be able to resync them with what I had already backed up.
