Need help : Switching Windows 98 to Windows ME

Jul 28, 2007 6:08AM PDT

It's my parents computer. They're so stubborn that they have never updated anything. Now they want windows ME to run. It's an older comp, Pentium 3.

What I need to know, if I load the windows ME, will it transfer all the files from 98 to ME? Or do I need to save everything onto disc like i've always been told?

They seem to believe you can just load it and everything will be saved and switched. Yes, I know i'm a noob ^_^ I have no problem with that. I'm also a -tad- computer illiterate. Haha...thanks for your help and time, if any.

Re: updating Windows 98 to Windows Me.

Windows ME, more or less, was a failure. The transition from Windows 98 to Windows ME has been described as downgrading rather than upgrading. So I would advice against doing so, unless there are good arguments. And you don't give such here.

If they still want to do it, note the following points:
1. It's easiest to do it with an upgrade version of Windows ME.
2. For a full OS CD to work you must rename two files in the windows folder first, as told in http://ww.computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/3385.html
3. You might have to install ME-compatible drivers for some devices. It depends on the device if the 98 driver still works. I expect no problems with application programs and data.

But, as I said, just don't do it.

Don't do it. Why?

If you thought Windows 98 was trouble for drives, Windows ME was actually worse. With more time passing since this version came out, finding drivers has never been rougher.

Please don't do this.

a new computer from dell or something. but make sure it has XP on it, Vista sucks. Or try Ubuntu or some Linux disto. They are easy to learn and most are free and open-source.
