Need help saving data from corrupted computer

Jun 15, 2009 5:01AM PDT

I have an HP computer. It keeps failing to load windows. I found a boot CD where I can see all my files, and I want to save them onto a series of flash drives before reformatting the hard drive. I tried using DOS commands to copy the files from the HD to the flash drive, but DOS isn't recognizing the E: drive. Any suggestions?

I am NOT a computer programmer. I know some basic DOS commands, but only because I've been using computers for a very long time. If you have any help suggestions, I'll need step-by-step instructions.

Thanks in advance!
Sue

Hi Sue

You bootcd didn't recognize your drive E: perhaps this drive is in NTFS Format and DOS not recognize this kind of file system... I recomended to you two ways:

Way 1...

1-Download and burn any GNU/Linux live-CD...like UBUNTU...

2-Boot your system with this CD...

3-This system can "set ups" your hard drive partitions...

4-Now you can copy all your data...

Way 2...

1-Boot with a WIndows XP Installation disk...

2-In the main windows select Intall a Windows XP...

3-Now the installation looks if another system is installed in your PC....

4-He shows a partition where the system is installed...

5-Select this partition (but no select Format OK?)...

6-Select Repair a system...
