Question

Need help on Laptop for 3D Modelling and rendering!

Feb 13, 2015 4:53AM PST

Hi,

Ive done a lot of research recently trying to find the best laptop that will run 3D modelling and rendering programmes such as Soldiworks, Rhino, Keyshot, Vray etc. After asking a lot of forums I have ended up with:

3XS Graphite LG1520

Intel Core i7 4720HQ, 2.6GHz, quad-core + HT, 6MB cache, 3.6GHz + TB

16GB Corsair Vengeance - 1600MHz,

3GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M, 924MHz GPU, 1280 Cores, 5000MHz RAM with IPS screen

128GB SSD, 500GB HDD

Total £1250

However I am also thinking does my laptop have to be this High spec? I understand that these programmes need relatively high spec to run smoothly, but the models i make do not consist of many parts and are not complex either, I just render animations and images in high quality.

So what I am asking is, is it necessary for me to spend this much? I'm happy to do so if thats whats required. But Would something like the Lenovo Y50 at £900 be able to handle such programmes at my level sufficiently?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks

Answer
In short, yes.

But the 128GB SSD could have new to this small boot drive screaming at the extra work to keep that clean. Yes, it's OK but you must be ready to do a lot of work over a paltry 99 buck savings. (I see 240/256GB SSDs for 99 bucks now.)

Thanks for the help Bob, if i was going for the higher spec option do you think the laptop I've mentioned above is good value for money in terms of its specs and will it run the programmes ok?

Thanks

You listed a more current model so you are getting something in the top 1% tier of what folk own. If that won't cut it, I'd say something's severely wrong with the apps.
