Here is a comparison of specifications for the two cameras:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_eos500d%2Cnikon_d90&show=all
The price of the D90 has dropped and can now be found for only about $100 over the 500D.
I suggest you go to a camera store and get your hands on both cameras and pick the one that feels best in your hands.
You can't make a wrong decision because both cameras are excellent choices.

Hi!
I am an amateur photographer, who is buying my first digital SLR. I have a roll SLR of canon with a EF 50 and a 28-80 lens.
I am interested in primarily shooting landscapes and wildlife once in a while. The cameras that I have been vacillating between are Nikon D90 and Canon 500D. Also, I am flirting with picking up a 18-105 VR lens and a 70-310 f/4-5.6 zoom lens.
Please let me know if anyone has views on these two cameras, along with the lenses. Also, in case there is another camera and/or lens recommended, please let me know.
To start with, I am headed to Rajasthan on a road trip in end of Dec and that's where I'll put these equipments to use, to start with.
