Need help getting a surround sound / home theatre system

by SimplySandy / April 21, 2011 5:58 AM PDT

I'm looking into getting a system for my hubbie for our anniversary. I heard that it's best if you pick the pieces you need instead of buying a bundle. Granted, buying the bundle would be easier if there's a good one. All we have right now is a Samsung LED tv and a Wii. I'm guessing I need to get the following:

Blue-ray player
Two speakers for the corners (hopefully wireless)
A sub-woofer(whatever that does)
Anything else to make the watching experience more vivid and entertaining.

I'd like to stay below $800 which I think is very do-able as long as I stay away from BOSE.

Would greatly appreciate any advide anyone can provide as I am completely out of my element. FYI - this is for the basement

You need two items:

1. A blu-ray player (if you want wireless networking you'll pay around 160-180. Samsung and Sony both make decent players in this range. You can also get them for 120-140 if you don't need the wireless networking.

If you shop at stores in the US you won't find this because of the laws of the land.

Your country might differ on this.

Only if you limit yourself to the big-box stores

Otherwise, they are quite easy to find in the U.S. in major metropolitan areas. FWIW, you can find them in brick and mortar stores with international electronics/goods, and also in 'Chinatown'-type ethnic neighborhoods. Links to one I have used by Chicago's O'Hare airport-

I'd stay away from Bose for other reasons

First, they are overpriced. Second, they don't provide good sound quality vs what you can get for the same money.
