Need help for printer driver installation PLS

Jan 21, 2015 2:22AM PST

Hello all,

it came to a point that what's happening is over my capacities. Could anyone pls help.

My OS; Windows 7 64bits

My printer; Canon MF3240 (multifunction printer with scanner, fax and printer)

When I connect the printer to my PC, in "Devices and Printers" I see MF3200 under Unspecified with a yellow triangle.

In Device Manager: Other Devices MF3200 with a yellow triangle.

I went to Canon website, downloaded and unzipped the driver in a folder: http://www.canon.ca/inetCA/en/serviceDetail/method/load/id/5/sid/28/mid/0002200215/type/S

So, when I right click in Device Manager under the Other Devices, Update driver Software, browse my computer for driver software, I mention the specific emplacement of the folder. I get an error message from Windows; Windows was unable to install your MF3200.

I start again; Browse for driver software on your computer, Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer; have disk; I choose directly in the folder one of the 3 files(CNXRPUW2, MF21SCN, MF3200AU, all 3 are setup information files).

I get a message; The folder you specified doesn't contain a compatible software driver for your device. If the folder contains a driver, make sure it is designed to work with Windows for x64-based systems.

I tried deleting and uninstalling. Add printer; Add a local printer; Use an existing port LPT1; Canon; Have disk and choose the downloaded driver. Print test doesn't work.

In Device Manager, I don't see and imaging device as supposed for the scanner.

I'm kind of lost.....if any of you need any more information pls feel free to ask.

Thank in advance for any advice that will be provided.

I regard

Guillaume

It appears you fell for the traps. There's more than one in your post.

1. You plugged in the printer before you were supposed to. No, it's not your fault but Windows and USB devices are a bone headed design where one time you just plug it in and the next time you must follow instructions (that nobody gives or reads.

2. You tried the update driver in Device Manager.

That button is dead to me. It's been discussed at length but it's the last thing I will try anymore. It's such a shame they never fixed it.

So, unplug the printer, uninstall what you have, remove the printer from any printer control panel and start again. Go get the current driver from Canon, run their installer and wait for them to tell you to plug it in.

You mean I have to go to their website, download and install the driver before plugging the USB cable from the printer to the computer ???

(NT) Yep. That's what he means.

That's what SAFE MODE and such is for.
Jan 21, 2015 2:53AM PST

In extreme cases I've used System Restore to just before the debacle, Safe Mode and in the real heroic mode, boot up any number of Live OSes (Today I have a Linux Mint on USB) to dive in and blow away a file that must go.

Thank you very much for your time.....could you pls point me which files do I have to run from the unzipped files of that driver package folder from Canon pls ???

Sorry no.

I've never had to extract files from the Canon installer. They may put the setup.exe in the zip but in over a decade I've never had to do anything beyond run the setup.exe from Canon.

Pretty close.

My last Canon install (mid-2014) went like that BUT the Canon installer did NOT install the driver until it prompted me to plug in the USB connection at some point. So it's slicing it finely that no is the answer to your question here.

Why not try it Canon's way?

That Canon "Installer" would be an .exe file...right ???

I can't check that out.

I took a quick look and found a few models for countries so it's asking too much for me to check 7 countries of models.

How about sharing the web page of that driver?

Did not see any zip file.

This is like half of what's in the unzipped folder with the unzipped files (fax, MF3200AU and scanner)

One of the perils of Windows I fear.
Jan 21, 2015 7:06AM PST

I took a look and didn't see any of the usual setup or install.exe's

I guess this isn't for you (Windows.) These product makers tend to think that everyone will look for the setup or install EXE. What EXEs are in that folder?

There's no .exe files in the folder except the zipped file downloaded. But when launched it only unzip them in the folder. In the read me file.....they say to update driver from device manager.

In my case it just doesn't work

Then it's incompatible.
Jan 21, 2015 7:26AM PST

I read the read.me and it's the very old, outdated driver install method that newer users won't be able to accomplish.

Sorry but it's a shame they used that method. The instructions are clear to me but I've been around a while and can't see where anyone could enhance those install instructions.

Are you presently using windows 7 ??? if so...would it be possible for you to try installing this driver even if you don't have that printer....and tell me which way you used to installed it pls ??

- Collapse -
Yes
Jan 21, 2015 8:38AM PST

But I don't own this printer so I can't check it out. The install method requires we own the printer. Since the install method is the really old arcane way, I can call this out as just too outdated for today's users or it's just incompatible with your system.

Sure, you may have not followed directions but the directions are gibberish to most folk.

Ok here are the news,

I was able to reach a Canon tech.....and he guided me for the installation. To reset the multifunction printer settings. Change the cable.

We were able to successfully install the driver for the printer and the fax. But, window still isn't able to recognize the imaging device.....I always get the same message:

Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device. Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it. Seeing the scanner picture. The system cannot find the file specified.

Tried to update for hardware changes many times.....unable to do anything for the scanner....anyone can help pls ???

Well, we have TWAIN, WIA and then scanners that are
Jan 23, 2015 2:46AM PST

Neither. Maybe it's time to try Hamrick.com?

This model is pretty old and looking over the install method it's the really old way. Today they printer/other thing makers don't use that method as it's arcane and will result in tech support calls.

Try Hamrick's scanner sofware.

I installed Hamrick software....as I expected.....since the scanner function of the MF32400 printer isn't identified in device manager.....the software doesn't recognize that there's one plugged to the computer.

When I scan for hardware changes.....windows is trying to find one....even manually, as I said I'm getting a windows error message

Sad

Remember this is that really old software install method.
Jan 24, 2015 1:27AM PST

You struggled with it, had to get them to fix and and they still flunked out.

Some scanners do not use Windows Image Acquisition or TWAIN. They use the makers own scan capture software and the Windows errors are ignored.

I wish you the best but this is one old system.

Still looks like the old install method.

Also, it's ScanGear based. The OP is struggling with trying to get the Windows scanner working and frankly I've yet to see that supported on this model.
