Hi there. I am a long-term desktop user and am finally migrating over to a laptop as I am preparing to move around a lot in the near future.. Its not so much using the laptop "on the go", but bringing it along to various places. Thus battery life is not a big deal for me. It doesn't have to be light, but I should be able to carry it throughout the day comfortably. As I will usually work on an external monitor, and it would be great if I could use two external monitors plus the laptop's screen.
Regarding the specs, I have rather high demands: I am a developer and need a fast processor, at least 8 GB of ram, and most importantly an SSD (either small SSD + bigger HDD or a hybrid solution would be fine for me).
As a secondary (!) requirement, I'm also a gamer and wouldn't like to sacrifice gaming performance just for the lack of a GPU in an otherwise fast system. So I should cleary go for dedicated graphics card. (I have no idea how the current state of affairs is concerning external graphics cards, e.g. via thunderbolt. If that would be an option, I'd definitely go for it).
TL;DR: my requirements in order of priority
1. Fast CPU, >8GB RAM
2. SSD (or hybrid)
3. Dedicated graphics card (preferably nvidia)
4. Option to use two external monitors
(the possibility of using a docking station would be awesome)
5. weight and size (I don't like something too clumsy)
6. good built-in keyboard
I'd be willing to make compromises in
- screen size and quality (as I work mostly on external monitors)
- touchpad (as I never use those)
- optical drives (don't need one at all)
- battery life
- looks (who cares?)
In my research so far, I have identified the Lenovo Y50 as a possible candidate for me, but I am very open to other suggestions. In fact it also hits my target budget of around 1000€ nicely. However, I'd be willing to spend more if necessary.
Thanks a lot.
