General discussion

need help buying surround speakers and AV receiver

Jul 18, 2005 7:17AM PDT

I am interested in buying an receiver that won't break my bank. I was looking at the Yamaha RX V1500, Yamaha HTR 5790 and the Harmon Kardon AVR 335. I was also looking into buying the Harmon Kardon speaker system HKTS 14 to go along w/the receiver. I need to have multiroom use.
I need to hook up cable tv, dvd player and Karoke disc player. I am not sure what to get. Please help
Thanks

I don't know, Harman Kardon all the way looks pretty great. Harman Kardon knows how to make sound systems. Any reason why you wouldn't just buy the C15, C25, or C35 set instead of buying the receiver and speakers separately? It seems like it could be a better price depensing on which set. Let me know what you decide on.

Thanks for the help, everyone says to buy the components and speakers separtely. What I hear is that they get better sound from the seperate a/v components.
I still am not sure.

A lot depends on your budget. HK has allwise made good gear. It is difficult to help when there is no price range. There are advanges in the alacart method, but low cost is usualy not one of them. John

Budget

$1000-1200
including surround speakers and receiver that has multiroom feature.
I really only need 5speaks (including the center channel)
Will this allow me to use the receiver to power 2 other speakers in the other room?
I was looking at Onkyo TX SR602 or SR702 on crutchfield website.
Also saw Aperion speakers on their website --Intimus 422/s-8 they are beautiful but pricey. should I spend the money?

if you want 2 room capability you might want to double check the stats for the sr602 ...according to crutchfield the sr602 only supports 1 set of main speakers "Main Speaker Output Pairs... 1". What you want is a receiver that has 2 sets of main speaker outputs or if you are looking at the front of the receiver you want to see a switch that says "speaker A and/or speaker B" also make sure bothe can be run at the same time.

Try this package from Cambridge Soundworks at this link...

http://www.cambridgesoundworks.com/store/category.cgi?category=ht_systemsrec&item=k1pk715zz

with the TX SR503 and 6 speker package for $999.00 US.

At 75 watts by 7 channels its not a public address system but will give good performance since it is a matched set. An extra 25 watts on another system only adds more dynamic headroom...not more volume so dont be fooled into thinking 200 watts is twice as loud as 100 watts.

Luck to ya.
