Need help building a computer

Mar 4, 2015 8:39AM PST

Hello. I'm new to this forum site and I'm having trouble finding a case or chassis for this motherboard, Dell MY171, F9394, DT029, HR002((http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IYZ1FKW/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=)). I've been looking for a couple of hours now but all I find is the actual computer this motherboard goes to. If anyone can help, please leave a comment. I also have a knowledge of computers, as in putting in RAM, Processors, etc.

Odd to resurrect a 2007 era desktop.

Wouldn't it be cheaper and end up with a faster PC with a more current machine?

Anyhow my advice is to get to ebay and buy the dell case for that model.

Thank you for your help though.

I looked and couldn't find any, I'll check again in a bit. I actually had this motherboard laying around, so I decided to build a computer with it.

Hope you have the CPUs and what looks like

Many Xeon servers used ECC memory. There were some hacks to mix ECC and non-ECC but if you run into registered ECC what a pain in the behind (wallet) to add RAM.

Let's see what CPU you have and then let's head to CPUBOSS to compare that to say an i7 (any vintage.)

Give it up.
Get a new motherboard, new case, forget messing with the "Dell" motherboard.

Why?

If this is a learning exercise, then maybe it's worth giving it a go, if you want to end up with a day to day working PC, then I'm with Bob and the others start with a better base.

"laying around"? In an antistatic bag in dry temperate conditions? Or just on a shelf gathering dust? If option 2 - dump it!

How much is already on the board? Bob has already cautioned on the cost of ECC memory, if that's what it needs and if it needs processor(s) the cost of Xeons is equally unattractive. Working secondhand ones rarely appear on the market, most servers are put in until they break and then just scrapped in favour of more up to date iron.

As James suggests, it may fit a standard ATX case but Dell have had some "unique" design ideas at times.

Your call.
