Need help ASAP with resetting graphics on Windows 98

Feb 12, 2009 10:53AM PST

My computer is running Windows 98 and when setting up my user account I somehow managed to change the graphics (i.e. words appear broken and the screen size is way off. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong and how to correct it? Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance for your help. My screen resoultion is showing 1280 by 600 pixels and I have no idea what "The monitor frequencies" are, I have never heard of it before. Any new advice? Thanks again

"The screen size is way off"

What exactly does that mean?
And what are 'broken' words.

All I can say: play with the properties of the desktop until it's right again. As this is Windows 98, you can try scanreg /restore also, to go back (5 days at most).
See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/221512. Personally, I boot into MS-DOS, not in Safe Mode with command prompt; but that might not make a difference.

Thanks for your help. Can you talk me through how to do the scanreg /restore? I know very little about computers so if you can give me step by step instructions that would be great..Thanks again

I think they are very clear. However, if there's anything you don't fully understand, ask about that specifically.

It does sound like a resolution problem. Have you tried lowering it to 800x600 and see what happens, the other setting that can be changed maybe 256 color or something with true color in it? Some times when I have had screen problems I was able to push a reset button on my monitor and it has fixed it. A lot will depend on what your video card can handle.
