Need Help :(

by doho / January 4, 2004 6:17 AM PST

Alright so here's the story..

Yesterday I came home from blockbuster after renting some dvds to watch. I turn on my computer and see that it was on 800x600 resolution. I was like hmm.. thats strange.. shouldn't it be on 1024x768? So my computer loaded slowly and normally and I went to my properties. I go to my settings and realize that under Monitor it says (Default Monitor) On with no video card after it. That's strange, my monitor is a flat screen Samsung SyncMaster 570V TFT. So I set my settings back to 1024x768. Yay! Back to normal! .. or so I thought. I went to my Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager and looked for my monitor. But it was nowhere to be seen! ***? I was like.. surely it's nothing too bad.. So I play around and attempt playing some Counter-Strike on OpenGL. Guess what? It gives me an error. I attempt to go to HP and Samsung's websites because my computer is a HP Pavilion 514n and my monitor is said above. No fixes..

So my questions are -

What do I do? My monitor practically got deleted from my computer. Any advice?

Pests come in more then one form, not just viri. Spyware is a leading cause of system slowdown. Run those tools that are in the link.

System restore is accessed through>>>
Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.

look in System Properties/ System Restore?

Run the tools and be prepared for a clean install of Windows.

No I do not have it enabled. And if I have a clean install of Windows XP will I lose all my files?

In reply to: Continue Here..

Not if you create backups to an external media of all your needed files.

Note:

On a clean install you need to:

1) Install updated motherboard drivers for XP
2) Install updated device drivers for your hardware
3) Reinstall all programs
4) Reinstall your backed up files.

Here is MS's explanation:

A Clean Install is done as a last resort when other options have been exhausted. Have you run the bug removers?
