Need GOOD firewall, antivirus, and antispy software!

Aug 6, 2006 11:34AM PDT

I am hearing SO many opinions on the best of the above. I need to know what the best of each is out there. Where can I purchase it? And is it free via download?

I run Norton 2005 Internet security now in addition to 3 other addional spyware programs (my free Yahoo antispy, AdAware, and my free Spybot which I love), but am interested in Zonealarm Internet Suite instead of Norton. Is this worth my time?

To prevent a virus from attacking while I switch software, should I unistall Norton first and than install another to prevent conflict, or do I install something else first and than uninstall the Norton?

Need GOOD..............

There are as many opinions on the subjects you raise as there are readers to this forum! I can tell you what I use, and it works for me.

I bought Zone Alarm Security suite. I've used it for about two years now and I like it. It is unobtrusive,
not a resources hog (like Norton & McAfee), and is very easy to use. I also use BitDefender 8.0 Free. A lot of people will have a fit if you install and run more than one AV software program, but these two play nice together and I've never had a problem. They both are set to scan everyday. You can get BitDefender from www.bitdefender.com. Select "Download" and look for the free BD download. Or go to www.infostar.com and click on the virus info page. There you will find 10 or 12 free AV programs. Please give Peter Greene a small donation for all the free work he puts into this great website! He takes PayPal. cash, checks, credit cards, etc. BTW, ZA Security Suite has a great firewall and you should turn off the Windows one.

For AS programs (of which you can run any number), I use Lavasoft's AdAware SE Personal, and Spyware Blaster
from www.majorgeeks.com. Both free. Spyware Blaster prevents spyware from getting into your machine, and
for the rare cases when it misses one, I have the AdAware.

You will run across many free programs which are good &
work well just by reading the Cnet Forums! Good luck and happy computing!

A P.S. TO THE PREVIOUS MESSAGE

Norton should be completely removed from your machine before you install the AV & AS programs I discussed. Norton does NOT play nice with other AV programs. You can download the programs you want to a file (I use the desktop), Go off-line and delete Norton thru your Control
Panel-Add/Remove programs. Then go to the Norton website and use their removal program. You will find many files under Symantec, not Norton. After Norton is dead you can open the downloaded files and install them.
