One of it's preceding models at a link I note in a second. Yes, an external mic connection is something you'll want. Then you can choose omni or uni directional mics depending on the situation.

I'm beginning a reserach project in which I will be visiting schools videotaping children eating lunch as well as in their classes. I'll also be talking to kids, parents, and teachers individually and doing some more face to face interviews. (I hope.) I may also be outside a bit... on farms and in gardens filming what kids are doing.
My budget limits me to not spending much more than 500 or so...
... especially with potential acessories I'll need. I've pretty muche decided that Mini DV is the way to go,
What's been hard is that I've been assuming I'll need an external mic in order to be able to pick up the sound of individual kids talking in a group.
Is that true???
I've been looking at cameras based on that assumption... so here's my list. Any thoughts???
sony dcr hc96 (top choice at this point)
canon zr800 (inexpensive, is it good?)
Panonsonic pv-gs300 (Like it, but cant' seem to find it anywhere...)
sony dcr sr62 or 4sr2
otehr cameras without mic jacks:
sony dcr hc48
pansonic sdr h18
pansonic pv gs 320
Thanks for any help and/or advice...
I guess my main question is whether or not i really should worry about the ext. mic...
