Need DVD Authoring Software Suggestions!

by Drayu / March 17, 2004 6:24 AM PST

Hello all,

I have a quick question for those of you in the know out there. I would like a DVD Authoring program, but I can't seem to find one. I would like one that has good quality and allows me to insert chapter points. I currently have the one that came with my DVD writer (arcsoft that allows me to insert chapters, but offers really crappy quality) and I also own Sonic MYDVD, but that one doesn't allow me to insert chapters (or I am not aware that it does). Can anyone offer a program that is worth the money and lets me insert chapter points? I don't need a video editor as I already use Nova's Video Explosion Deluxe. Thank you in advance for any guidance you can provide!

My thought on this is .. crap in will equal crap out.. and its caueses are many; input material/s, capturing device or computer itself, and last of all maybe software/s.

As for inserting chapters, I thought that's one of the functions of an editor. I have Sonic MyDVD also and you can create chapter/s with it. You do this by "get movie" then double click on it and edit movie for your chapter/s creation. Anyway, give it a try and if you have more questions about this, just post back.

I have two other programs (dvd moviefactory2 and winDVD creator) each with it's good and bad points.

Thanks for the reply Art! Let me see if I understand this as I am not at home and I don't have access to try it. I have already edited my clips, arranged them into a movie, added all of my effects and sounds that I wanted. I then converted that into a DVD compliant file using my video editor (Nova Video Explosion Deluxe). Now with all that done, I go into Sonic MyDVD (V4.5) and select get movie. Once I see it, I double click it and then I will see the movie playing I assume. Once the movie is playing I hit a button or something to make a chapter point?

Thank you very much for any help you can offer a newb in video editing!

PS. I gotcha on the crap in crap out thing Happy

I am not sure what dvd compliant means. I hope it isn't some proprietary format of "nova video expl." In my case, I work with mpeg (.mpg) files because that's what come out of my capturing device, stored in the harddrive. Anyway, let me know how it goes after you played with it. good luck.

Hello again,
No, my video editor does not have a proprietary file system, I just called mpeg2 what they called it, DVD Compliant. But anyways, I opened the mpeg2 file that I created with my video editor in MYDvd. But from there, I am not sure where to go. When I used the help button it said that I couldn't insert chapters. SOrry to ask for so much help. And once again, thank you for any guidance you can offer!

I have ver. 4.04 of Mydvd so your V4.5 should have more.

When you open Mydvd you have displayed menu with "capture". "movies", "slide show", etc.
You click on "movies" and get your mpeg files from the harddrive. After you got the file, you DOUBLE click on that little picture windows then another menu will be displayed and that's where you set your start and finish times for the chapters then click "ok". Repeat; get same mpeg file but adjust to different time setting to form another chapter (you can change the title/s to chapter just by clicking on the text). I'll stop here and let you play with it first. Have fun.

Thanks so much! I got it to work. What I realized is that I am not taking one file and adding chapters to it, but rather inserting the same file over and over and trimming off the parts I don't want. Not my idea of the way to do it, but for now it works so that I don't have to buy other software. But, with that said, I may have to move to Roxio Suite 7 because it offers everything from audio to video to photo, plus DVD authoring and surround sound! Anyways, once again thanks for all your help.
