Need app that will convert divx > mpeg2 to burn to DVD

Feb 2, 2005 4:57AM PST

hey
I just needed a program that converts divx videos to mpeg2 (mpeg2 that will work on DVD players), I am a bit of a newbie to this so any suggestions on which apps are good would be really appreciated, ofcourse if the program does the burning too that would be a bonus!.

PS I am willing to spend money on the software if it does what I need hence dont limit yourself to freeware.

Any help really appreciated as i'm clueless atm !

Thanks for the quick reply, could you please tell me the name of the Ulead product which you mentioned, there seem to be several about.

Also does it work reliably?.

Thanks again

It's best to try the bundled software first. I've done this with the bundled Ulead DVD MovieFactory 2.

It works for me. Is that reliable enough?

Try..

From a former reply...

In ascending order...

From easy to use and more...

Look at DVDSANTA, Ulead DVD MovieFactory, DVDLAB (and PRO!) http://www.mediachance.com/dvdlab/ then Adobe Premeire and continuing upwards to the AVID Pro software.

That's a big spread from about 30 to a few thousand dollars to see where you want to land.

Lots of programs to choose from - some tips
Feb 2, 2005 6:43AM PST

Your question is pretty vague, as you havent mentioned a few things...important points that affect what program Id recommend are
- is audio quality an issue, ie ac3 etc etc
- is it just divx, or are there xvids, avis, rmv files as well that you want to convert....not all software converts all file types.
- are you looking to make menus, ie, putting two episodes of whatever youve downloaded onto a dvd, you are going to want a menu
- how good is your pc..this is critical, as the processing power required to convert file types is significant, and the difference between an old p3 and something state of the art can make an incredible difference...plus boat loads of RAM is useful.
- what quality are you after, and what is the quality of your source video.
Seriously...can go on and on with this.

In saying all that, a great place to immerse yourself will be www.dvdrhelp.com (the site has changed, but this url still redirects there)

But, to give you an actual quick answer, I use WINAVI video converter for quick, not to fussed conversions, and it is very quick, typically taking 45 mins to convert 2 hours of xvid, has a very simple interface, and can batch files which is nice...but the results are what youd expect from such a quick process.
Procoder2 gives excellent results, but is much slower, and its pretty expensive if you buy it. TmpGenc is a big forum favourite, but is less intuitive than the others...there are heaps of guides though, so dont sweat it.
There are many others, check out that website, browse thru the tools and look at some of the user feedback, then give one a go.
Good luck

Thanks Gav Happy
I'm thinking that i'll give Ulead moviefactory a quick try and see how that goes, i'm not too worried about the speed of the encoding, I mean i can always leave it running overnight etc.

so yeah i'll give it a quick try and see how it goes, Thanks for the links, they are pretty informative
