Need advice setting up whole home speaker system

by pdrpoet / March 19, 2014 11:55 PM PDT

I just purchased a new house that needs significant renovations which I will be performing myself. I will have walls/ceilings open so I thought it was a great opportunity to put some speakers in the ceiling and wire everything up properly.

I was hoping I could get some advice here on the basic system set up.

My idea so far was to buy a Pioneer VSX-822-K receiver that will live in a cabinet in the den. I want to add ceiling speakers in 6 rooms inside the house and two speakers outside on the patio. I have been looking online and Polk/JBL etc sells "systems" that include 6 rooms systems for a very reasonable price ($200-300). I am not an audiophile by any means, I am looking for a decent set up that allows me to play some music while we have friends over.

The main question I have right now is I plan on using the Pioneer app on my android phone to control the whole system and how does the receiver indicate which speakers are which. Ideally, I would like to label the speakers as the rooms they are in:"Dining Room" "Kitchen" Den" etc.

Would I need another component to achieve this?

Any other advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

Clarification Request
*Which* Polk system are you referring to(?)

We need more specifics unfortunately. Model number, please. These products are all very different/offer different features. 'Whole home audio' can mean a lot of different things. If the Polk system you have in mind offerings some sort of switcher (w/ remote, hopefully) to control each respective pair/room, that's likely not going to be 'seen' per se via the Pioneer. Some of the Polk speakers are IP addressable, so that means they would at least be able to be controlled by a computer. YMMV, until we know more specifics.

That said, keep in mind that most (probably not all) off the shelf receivers that include iOS/Android apps will not allow you to control additional speakers besides what's native to the AV receiver (e.g. A/B + C).

You will need an additional amp

In reply to: Here is the link

Since that receiver offers an UNPOWERED zone 2, you would need to utilize a second amp to run the other speakers. Actually, if you read the user reviews on the overstock site, someone indicates they used just such a setup. YMMV. They seem to offer some models also by Pyle, starting at around $100+.

So it would be connected as follows:

AV receiver (unpowered zone 2 output) -> Secondary amp --> Pyle switching unit --> Pyle speaker pairs
