Need advice please!

Feb 4, 2006 2:47AM PST

I need to get a wireless router that wil connect other wired pc's as well. I just picked up the Netgear WGT624 v 3 108mbps wireless router, mainly because it said on the box that it was 2x faster than the Linksys wireless G (I know, I'm a sucker). The Netgear was horrible! I conected it and every web page the pc's went to, it would pause for about 2 minutes before the page displayed. I'm definitely taking it back...but I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on a good dependable wireless router (that won't take 2 minutes to open web pages)?
Thanks

If you want to try something.. maybe it will get the router to perform as it should.

Did you update the Firmware?

What if you open the website using the Wired pc, is it faster?

What and/or how do you connect your network..?

all other info..?? Large Host file, maybe??

I don't think we can point you to certain brand.. and tell you that the product is superior than the other...

I myself using Linksys, many other using other brand.

When I set it up I just followed the instructions so I don't think I updated any firmware?.?.
But I don't have the wireless pc yet, so the issues were all with the wired connections. As soon as I reconnected my old router, web pages come up quickly. Its not that the other router wasn't working, it was just a lot slower loading pages.
Thanks for the help though. With all the different types of wireless routers, I wasn't sure if it was the wrong brand or type for what I was trying to do.

Aha!!!

You did not say you had a previous router connected in your first message. I suspect that your old router and devices are still running the show.

maybe

I did have another non-wireless router. When I went through the setup for the Netgear it did ask me how the netwrok was configured. I did select the option where it asked about a previous router. But do I have to do something extra to the other PCs that are connected to the router? The setup just said to connect the PCs...maybe I should try the setup again...

This where the problem could be

suspected.. you said:

'When I went through the setup for the Netgear it did ask me how the netwrok was configured. I did select the option where it asked about a previous router'

Two Routers .. How you connect them??

first, you need to disable the DHCP in one of them.
second, you might want to connect:
Modem -- Router (DHCP enable) -- Wireless Router (DHCP disable) -- other devices...

still worth it

It is still worth downloading and installing the latest firmware for that router. If it doesn't solve the problem, at least you can eliminate the firmware from your troubleshooting.

Configuration problem?

Sounds more like a software conflict to me. I would first try to run the router's setup procedure again. You could also have some sort of malware on your computer. Set the router back to factory defaults and run the setup procedure again. Taking the router back may help but you may also have the same problem with a different router.

I ended up getting a new router, but I did a few things differently this time during setup. One, I had the router connect using DHCP? or something like that. Also, I connected all my pc's to the router during setup as opposed to just one computer and then trying to connect the others after setup. This time it seems to work.
Thanks for the help again, its appreciated!!!
