Resolved Question

Need advice oncomponents for my 4K gaining PC

Mar 7, 2016 5:48AM PST

Hi, this is my first post so I'll do a little introduction of my self first. I'm 18 years old and live In Sweden. Recently I decided to ditch the console and build myself a PC, which is why I'm here. After some hours of research I have learnt how to build my own PC and why it is better than buying a pre-built one.

Although I now know how to build it I'm still not completely sure which components I should use. I've been on Pcpartpicker.com trying to choose the right components but I get pretty confused on what parts to pick as there are so many to choose from. As I want to game in 4K I know I need a pretty good graphics card or two. I'd also like to use it as a htpc.

What I have decided on so far is just the CPU as I'm going with the i7 6700k.

For the motherboard I have a hard time coming to a conclusion. I need one on the Z170 platform (skylake). There are probably some good ones out there but I don't really know exactly what functions i need as well what a price to pay for one.

I was thinking of going with two gtx980 ti's for graphics but I recently read about the new pascal gpu coming out this year. It's based on a 16nm architecture. It is said to be more efficient. Should I wait for this or get a current gen GPU or do you guys think the new Pascal gpu will lower the price on current gen GPUs so I can get the gtx980 ti's cheaper after the pascal is released later this year?

As for ram I think 16-32gb is going to be more than enough. I guess it will be ddr4.

I don't know what case to get but I've been thinking of going with a colour combination of white and blue, black and blue or a combination of the three. Black and white also looks pretty nice, but ultimately I might go with white and gold. What colour combinations do you guys think looks nice?

I'm planning to do custom liquid cooling and I really want to push the aesthetics on this build. So it is important to get parts with the same colour combination I'm going for. I've found it to be really hard to find a good motherboard with the right colours, so is there a way to cover it after I have installed all the other parts?

I know there's a lot of questions in this post so I apologies, but I'll just summarize them below:

1. What colour combination do you think I should go with?

2. What makes a motherboard good and how to pick between them.

3. Is there a way to cover the motherboard if I choose to go with one that does not go with rest components colourwise?

4. How to plan a build when both performance and aesthetics are important? Minimize cable clutter?

5. Any tips on making a aesthetically nice build. And just how to plan the aesthetics?

6. Is it worth waiting for the new Nvidea Pascal GPU and do you think it will affect the price of current gen GPUs?

7. Any advice you have to offer and also a recomend me components please, preferably a whole build.

Thanks in advance Happy

Let's read a prior 4K gaming rig and see how they got there.

Don't want 1080p
Mar 7, 2016 10:01AM PST

If I want to play at 1080p ill just play on my ps4, I want to play at higher resolutions than that. I'm going to see how the Nvidia Pascal GPUs will preform and decide GPU later.

Any advice on the other points I mentioned?

Wait.

Keep an eye on Tomshardware to see what GPU trio will deliver. I find it a shame that a trio of Titan X's didn't hit 60 FPS.

Wait How Long

How long should one wait in hopes of getting something new, I assume you mean i should wait for a real GPU capable of 4k gaming?

I can't tell you exactly how long.

But I hope you see that a trio of very high end cards didn't deliver in my opinion and by the numbers. We're not there yet.

There are gamers that are more than a little upset after they get a 4K or more likely UHD display (some don't know these are not the same) then discover that a single GPU is not delivering today.

Now that 4K and UHD displays are out, the work is underway for GPUs to fill the void.

Watch Tomshardware to see what shows up.

I see your point

Im going to see how this year delivers in regards for 4k gaming. I agree with you that it is a shame that three Titan Xs don't deliver, and that is stupid expensive.

Thanks for your input, I really appreciate it.
