Need advice on updating my CPU/MB/RAM

Jun 5, 2013 10:22AM PDT

Ten years ago I used to build and tinker with desktops; now I'm just confused with the new buzzwords and tech, especially when it comes to CPUs.

I currently have an AMD X2 duel core 4800+ 2.50ghz, with 3gb of RAM and crappy on-board video. It can be painfully slow.

I would like to spend in the $200-250 range, with video that'll work on my 22" monitor without stuttering. I'm looking for a CPU/MB/RAM combo that I can effectively swap in for my current set-up. I like to play some older games, but nothing graphic intensive. Beyond that, I just want something that'll allow me to be converting a video file with iTunes open while surfing the internet. I can't really do that with what I have right now.

I'm having a rough go parsing through all the options on newegg.com, etc., so I'm open for any and all advice/good buys that people know of. Thanks!

Budget

I think your budget needs a little work.
As soon as you said video editing you could easily jump to the 1000 buck range.

See if this fits.
Cpu.....amd a10-5800k
Mobo.....pick one that supports the cpu and has the features you want.
Ram.....2x4GB of the fastest ram the mobo will support in native mode.

I guess I didn't mean video editing. But sometimes I have a video that I need to convert from avi to mp4, etc, which I can do on my current machine, but it's so CPU intensive I can't really doing much else while that's happening. Thanks for the feedback.

What operating system are you using ?

Why not add a video card with its own RAM. You'll free up system ram and have faster video.

If you upgrade further, you can continue to use the new video card with the new MB.
