need advice on DVD recorders...

by rysev / January 27, 2009 5:01 AM PST

Looking to get a new dvd recorder with vhs combo. what's the difference with having the digital tv tuner or not? I have a cable box that i need to use for my system - do i really need to have the tuner in the dvd recorder? I don't understand the difference. I would think that if I just had cable running right into my tv with no box then I would need the turner in the recorder. Can someone just confirm this with me.
Thanks
Ryan

Tuner needed in VCR/DVD Combo
by leohifi / January 28, 2009 5:39 AM PST

I'm in the process of replacing a defunct LG VCR/DVD Burner Combo. I do not have a set top box, cable passes through the Combo to the TV. Yes, I needed a tuner and found that limited my choices since most low cost combos are tuner free.

You have a set top box so the question is whether your box has digital output. If so, then the set top box will act as a tuner for a modern tuner-free DVD/VCR. If you have an old analog set top box that selects stations but uses coaxial RF to connect to your TV (e.g. TV set to channel 3) then the Combo needs a tuner just to receive channel 3.

What do you want the recorder to do?
by ahtoi / January 28, 2009 12:57 PM PST

Simple; cable box, ATSC tuner, QAM card, are for selecting channels. If your dvd recorder is not going to select channels independently then you don't need one.
