Need advice on choosing a monitor

Nov 5, 2008 10:15AM PST

I am trying to decide on an monitor that will work as the primary display (monitor 1) for my setup. The LCD TV below will be set-up as monitor 2 and will mostly be a cloned/mirrored image of monitor 1, but may also sometimes be switched into extended desktop mode. Depends on what I need to do. My application is somewhat like a HDHT in the fact that I would like to watch movies with it in as clear a picture possible, but mostly this is a work application. 2 users will be involved...person #1 - the programmer - facing and working on the desktop PC (using main montior #1) while person #2 - customer - faces the opposite direction and will be watching on the LCD TV mounted on the wall ("monitor" #2). This person is an inactive participant and really only needs to be able to view visuals and hear the surround sound. The programmer will sometimes need the customer to be able to read text on the screen, and also to view graphical data hence my HD needs I think. The visuals will basically be video clips tied in with the surround sound. Like I said though, after work I hope to watch DVDs since this setup hopefully will be way better than what I have at home Happy

I bought the flat screen first - Samsung LN-S3251D. Specs are (http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-tvs/samsung-ln-s3251d/4507-6482_7-31787622.html):
32" LCD TV
Ports: 2 HDMI type A, 1 VGA input 15-pin HD D-Sub for PC connection, 2 S-Video, 1 set of component jacks, 3 sets of RCA phono AV-IN, digital optical audio 1 serial port (Samsung says HDMI ports on 2006 and later models are not compatible with PC's, but I've found a threads with users who have PC's set up thru the HDMI with this TV - I would prefer that - so it must be able to work despite what Samsung says!)
Display Format: 720p
Native Resolution: 1366x768
16:9 AR
4000:1 CR
Widesreen modes: 16:9, 4:3, Zoom1, Zoom2
Response Time: 8ms
HDTV ready
Video input formats: 480p, 480i, 1080i, 720p

Next, I have the Diamond Viper ATI HD Radeon 2600XT video card. Specs/sys req's are (http://reviews.cnet.com/graphics-cards/ati-radeon-hd-2600/4507-8902_7-32489776.html?tag=mncol;psum):
Ports: Dual DVI-I + 1 S-Video, or 1 HDMI type A (with adapter), 1 HDTV output (with adapter), 1 VGA 15-pin HD D-Sub (w/ adapter)
Max Resolution (external): 2560x1600
Max Resolution Details: DVI-2560x1600 / VGA-2048:1536
Sys Req's----
At least WinXP OS
1GB RAM
480MB HD
400W power supply
1 PCIe x16 slot available

Lastly, I bought the JVC TH-L1 All-in-One 5.1 channel surround sound system. Specs are (http://reviews.cnet.com/surround-speaker-systems/jvc-th-l1-home/4507-7868_7-32422573.html?tag=mncol;rnav):
5 satellite speakers
1 subwoofer
1 receiver/control unit
Receiver interfaces (most in rear, 1 set in front)----
2 HDMI IN
1 HDMI OUT
1 Digital IN (orange RCA looking plug)
1 Digital Optical Audio
2 sets of component audio/video IN (RCA phono)
2 set of composite IN
1 composite audio/video OUT
1 component video OUT
1 S-Video OUT
2 S-Video IN
1 USB (front)
1 component audio/video IN (Front)
2 SPDIF input
1 SPDIF output

I do not have the PC yet...that will be my last purchase since I want to be sure it's going to be able to work with all my components. WinXP Pro or Home will be the OS. Will not/cannot use Vista in my existing network that the PC will eventually connect to.

So, with all that said, can anyone point me in the right direction on compatible monitors, or at least specs I should be looking for in a monitor that will work with the components I have thus far? I at least know my monitor needs to be as close to 1:1 pixel mapping with the LCD TV, and I was hoping with choosing the appropriate monitor for use with that video card, I could find something that works perfectly together (without having to get into PowerStrip if possible). Thank you very much in advance for anyone's input.
