Need advice from you guys.

Need new handycam.Settled on Mini DVC format at this time.Prefer Sony or Canon.Looking at Sony DCR HV38 or 48,and/or Canon ZR850 or equivalent.Leaning towards 38 or 48 after reading expert submissions in this forum.Don't need light on 850,or mike jack.Not fussed with touch screen on Sonys but appears picture,stabilizer and overall quality of Sony is better.

For what you say you want, you have some good choices. Honestly, you would be happy with either of them. You are now nit-picking... personally, I would be leaning toward the HC48... at least it has the Sony proprietary interface so if you change your mind on the external mic thing, at least you can easily use Sony proprietary mics (there is an adapter, but it is yet another part - so I would not call it "easy")...
