Resolved Question

Need advice about gaming laptops!

Jul 29, 2014 2:58AM PDT

Alright, so I've been researching gaming rigs for about two months now, and I was almost entirely settled on an ASUS RoG, more specifically, this guy here:

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834231934

So, I've been pinching my pennies together, squeezing the old bank account until it hurts to save up for this critter, and during the adventure I spotted an interesting alternative...

http://www.staples.ca/en/CyberPower-PC-Fangbook-EVO-HFX7-900-Gaming-Laptop-173-28GHz-Intel-Core/product_1009750_2-CA_1_20001

Now, they seem to be around the same price range, but the Fangbook is insanely more powerful than the ASUS RoG I was originally sold on... (6GB graphics? @_@)

My question for you guys, has anyone had experience with Fangbooks? Are they as good in practice as they are on paper? I know ASUS is a well-rated company, but I've barely heard of CyberPowerPC, and finding ratings on their Fangbooks is even more difficult.

I want something that's going to last my years, not conk-out five weeks after the one-year manufacturers' warrantee. What's your thoughts on 'em?

The second link didn't work for me.

But my son had a ROG unit for years. The Fang is reviewed out there but CyberPower's reviews over the years have me writing I'd shop elsewhere.

Strange, maybe the .ca?

Odd, maybe you need to be in Canada for the .ca site to work.

Essentially the Fangbook is a powerhouse unit,

2.8GHz Intel Core i7-4810MQ Quad-Core Processor with Hyper-Threading (6MB L3 Cache, 3.8GHz Turbo)
16GB DDR3L system memory
1TB SATA 6.0Gbps 7200RPM hard drive
17.3" Full HD (1080p) LED-Backlit LCD Display with Anti-Glare Technology
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 6GB GDDR5 Graphics Card

Buuuut, regardless of what's under the hood, if it can't keep it cooled, or it dies prematurely, it's nothing but an overpriced paperweight.

In this case, you would recommend the RoG unit moreso?

I lived in Vancouver for many years so another minus for Cyberpower. Avoid.
