Need a way to organize companies files

Hello everyone! Please help!

I need a way to organize the hundreds of files my company produces. We build data recorders for aircrafts and as you can imagine, we have a lot of documents that need to be organized in a way that they can be quickly accessible. I would prefer a low-cost open source solution. I hope you can help. Thanks in advance.

There are many socalled Content Management systems, but first, can you tell what's wrong with the very clear and very accessible and very free (included in Windows) system of folders and subfolders.

I need more functionality then just folders and subfolders. I would also prefer this solution be an "intranet" like solution that is webbased

When I first read your post, I thought I must be missing something basic because I had the same question Kees has posted. Are you familiar with Windows files and folders, how to create them and how to organize them? Of course there are database programs like MS Access and SQL server, but those aren't free. A Google search for database software free yields the following link:

seeing that he posted in the web design forum, I think he has a requirement he forgot to mention: the data should be accessible via a web-based interface. And for all the nice things you can say about Windows, files on a server aren't. For that you need something like Sharepoint Services (which is free on Windows servers): http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=7006

But, of course, this is just guessing. The OP was rather silent about the requirements, except that he has a lot of documents.

Forgive me for not introducing myself.

My name is Crystal Lopez and I am an IT Specialist at my company. We have two sides to our company, Manufacturing and Engineering. Of course there is also an Administration. We have company procedures, Product documents, engineering schematics, BOMS, etc. that incorporate into our business.

These documents need to be organized in a manner in which is easily accessible to the employees at my company. Some employees may know the same document as a different name. Therefore there needs to be a strong search capability incorporated for easy document location. I appreciate any input!

Open Atrium. They just released version #2 and it can be anything you want it to be, from content management system to intranet. On top of that, it's free and open source, so you can develop any missing functionality.

That is, think of filing cabinets and you would place files for a thing in a cabinet (that's a folder in drive) and then in that cabinet you make more folders for things like the date recorded and then the actual data file in the dated folder.

All there and organized for retrieval by thing and date.
