The current Version DSL modem offering also has the wifi router builtin. I'd use that.

Hello,
I'll be moving from a PC-Dialup to a MacBook-DSL with a single computer setup: is a router necessary?
Thanks --- Tosca

Hi Bob,
Don't understand what "current Version DSL modem" means (whole DSL thing is new for me)- I received a kit from Earthlink with what I believe is a PPPoE dsl modem, and when I asked them about connecting a router for a single computer they went ballistic - said they wouldn't support it.
Also - I should have noted that I have no need/desire to go wireless - would that make a difference in the need for a router?
Tosca
I was sharing the current DSL providers supply what you need. If you can't tell the make and model of the dsl modem I can't answer it any better.
Bob
Sorry - I misunderstood "current": the Earthlink modem provided is ZyXEL, model # P-660R-D1

Thanks so much, Bob. Am I misinterpreting this or does this model make any other router unnecessary?
Tosca
I reread your post and couldn't find a reason for a second router.
Maybe you wanted WIFI (did you ask and I missed it?) If so, just set the wifi router as they say for cable and in most cases it will work fine.
Bob
After badgering Earthlink again, come to find out the ZyXEL is not used as a router, just as a DSL internet interface - how they do that I have no idea and really don't care at this point. And no, I don't want wireless - so - I'll go with my NetGear router.
Thanks so much for all your help.
Tosca
You know, I saw that term being used by EL in a newtorking article - I may even take a look for the hell of it.
Again - thanks Bob for all your help. While this has been frustrating to some extent, I've learned a lot and rather enjoyed it.
