The next generation of Laptops have just been released but they are still running the G4.
It is unlikely that we will see a G5 laptop in the near future. they are still working on the heat issue.
I'm guess the next major change in laptop configuration will be the release of the Intel powered ones, sometime in 2006/7
Your KVM switch idea will work, just get one without software and you should have no problem.
If you need a laptop now, go for it

I am a digital film student and I am going to need to buy a Mac in the next year or two. I would like to buy a laptop to be able to take to school. I have a very nice desktop pc at home and I would like to be able to plug the laptop into a KVM or something similar to be able to use is as if it were a desktop at home when I needed to. I want to be able to use my usb keyboard and mouse, digital monitor, and 5.1 speakers with the laptop. I know a lot of KVM's use software to switch between computers, but would this work between a mac and a pc? Also, the G4's have been out for some time now. Are the next line of mac laptops so far away that I should go ahead and get a G4? Or are they close enough that it would be worth the wait? Thanks for the help!
