Question

Need a laptop/tablet to connect to my samsung smart tv

I have a 55" Samsung Smart tv model UN55HU6950F and I want to be able to watch past episodes of some shows that are no longer on regular TV. I am told that even though I can use the TV to get online I still need to connect a PC/Laptop/Tablet to the TV so that I can watch these programs online and have it show up on my TV.

I have a laptop, but it does not have a HDMI port--only a 2.0 USB--Can I use the 2.0 USB port to connect to the TV HDMI port?

If not what type of device do I need to buy in order to connect? Laptop or Tablet? How much Ram/Storage-HHD do I need to do this type of connection?

Must this be UHD (4K)?

In reply to: Need a laptop/tablet to connect to my samsung smart tv

If so, the creds (specs) for the laptop is going to be very high today. And USB 2.0 to UHD for video is too slow. Even 3.0 may not be enough. I think you need to confirm the need for UHD first.

That said, the usual run of the mill laptop with HDMI at about 200 will be fine for 1080p and let the TV upscale.

It's 200 at https://www.groupon.com/deals/gs-hp-elitebook-2560p-12-5-i5-4gb-320gb-refurbished?deal_option=f3116015-0720-472b-a99b-8d5ac2ac057e

I have an older Core2Duo that I use for this. Here's the display port to HDMI cable.

Tablet? What tablet would do this? None I know of.

Question about cable that you mentioned-

In reply to: Must this be UHD (4K)?

Thanks for your reply.

I looked at the links that you posted and I have some questions.

The link for the cable shows a HDMI end that would connect to the TV and a display port end that connects to the laptop. Is that the normal setup for connecting a laptop to a TV?

I was looking at the owner's manual for the Toshiba laptop that I have and they mentioned that some models had a HDMI port (mine does not have that port)----what is that port used for on those models?

I have never dealt with the "Groupon" website that your link sent me too. Can you tell me about them? Is it a reliable company?

Yes, it's a normal setup.

And my brother and I have ordered some dozen laptops from Groupon deals. Saved a lot of dough.

Re: Smart TV

It depends on the apps available on the smart TV and on what you need to view those episodes if you need another device them or in fact anything that's on the Internet. It could be it has those apps, it could be you could use the browser in the smart TV.

In general, anything with a HDMI out that can play what you want to see, is OK. That can be a Windows or Linux PC/laptop, a tablet or any Android box, or a device like a Roku. Or on the PC, if you can use Chrome to view it or certain apps like Netflix, a Chromecast would do - with the advantage it's wireless.
If your PC doesn't have HDMI you can use a USB to HDMI adapter (be sure it has the right drivers for your OS), or install a videocard that has HDMI.

Only if you want to view 4K or UHD shows, the specs of the PC matter. For just HD anything that run Windows 7,8 or 10 is fine, although I would prefer 4GB RAM above 2GB. For streaming you don't need storage, but don't go lower than 128 GB for Windows. For Linux and Android 32 GB or 64 GB is enough.
