Need a good camera for a trip to Hong Kong for a month

Jan 31, 2011 9:24AM PST

Hi all,

I'm looking for a camera (not necessarily a pocket sized or ultra compact one) that can make good night shots and is reasonably fast and of course has very good image quality. I would also prefer if it had a zoom higher than 3x-4x.

My budget range is 300-350 euro (apprx. $400). I will be taking pictures of night life in Hong Kong in summer and need a good camera that I can carry for a whole day (and maybe a whole night).

So far I came across:
1)Canon S95 which costs 339 euro
2) Sony DSC-HX1, which costs around 270 euro, and has sweeo panorama, which is a very attractive feature, but I've heard Sony isn't so good in the image quality area.

Please advice me on whether or not I should consider some other proven brands and that can do the job well. I would appreciate your thoughts and advice.

I don't know of any big zoom camera that is particularly good in low light situations.
The Sony HX1 is one of their first CMOS cameras, and their biggest zoom camera.
The CMOS sensor is supposed to help the low light ability by one f-stop (not a lot).
Too bad the picture quality was not up to snuff.

The Canon S95 and Panasonic LX5 are better than average in low light, and the picture quality is very good.

thank you for your reply, i'll definitely look into panasonic LX5 as well. Zoom is not necessarily a priority, just thought it might help in case i'm far or it's too crowded
