perhaps you should be a little more specific as to what it is you expect this "search program" to do

repair windows Pro XP
Sep 24, 2011 5:30AM PDT

how does one go about repairing. I'd love to do that. Have no money. Can not up date or buy new.
But believe when & if I can will get an apple lap top as strongly recommended by my daughter since
I am more and more resorting to lying in bed for relief of pain due to Backward S spinal curve. Could
hopefully use laptop in bed. Need to use what I have as long as it will work for me. I have kept up the
downloaded updates from Microsoft as to viruses etc plus have Adware.

So, are you saying that . . .
Sep 24, 2011 4:24AM PDT

when you click Start, Search, For files and folders, it's not there?

Do you have an up to date anti-virus program running and have you scanned your PC. BTW, Uniblue and Speed up my PC are mostly scams.

download again from where or how
Sep 24, 2011 5:34AM PDT

I know there is a original copy of system somewhere on my disk but have not found it to attempt
a very early restore. The program only refers to fairly recent possibilities for a restore that does
not affect all the updates. I can follow clear instructions. Help very much appreciated. Thanks

the windows desktop search form presents itself but it is non functional. A window pops up telling
me to go to start > all programs > windows desktop search which I did several times but it still
will not work & keeps saying the same thing " "

Answer
Allright, let's try this . . .
Sep 24, 2011 7:08AM PDT

Click Start, Run, type cmd

When the DOS-like window opens type sfc /scannow (there is a space between the c and the /)

System File Checker will make sure all system files are correct.
