Need a digital camera that can take night shots, too

Mar 14, 2010 3:22PM PDT

I am willing to spend about $500 (I guess) on a new camera. Do you have any suggestions for a digital camera that can take great shots during the day and night shots, too? I have been using a Canon PowerShot SD750, which I really like, but it is time for a new camera that can do more.

Thanks,

Mark

one question

What type of night shots are we talking about? Are you looking at low light shooting of people or are you wanting to shoot more of landscape or scene shooting?

Night scene with a person standing in front

You need to use high ISO and slow shutter to expose the background, a tripod to stabilize the shot, and a flash to expose the person in front. If you don't know how to adjust manual settings, then the Program mode is quite easy to use.
A camera with better high ISO performance will give a better looking background. For compacts, Canon G11 or S90, Panasonic LX3, are pretty good. D-SLR obviously will do a lot better but cost and weigh more.
