NEC Versa E680 BIOS update

My computer had been giving me a black screen recently, which progressed to a black screen with flashing lines, and then a blue screen flash which said I had BIOS errors, and finally a blue screen when I start up my computer.

Yesterday my university lab tech ran chkdsk /r and pronounced the computer fine, but here's the blue screen again. I couldn't even boot into safe mode and had to choose "disable restart on system failure."

Microsoft directed me to "Blue screen error caused by a device or driver" so I updated all my drivers. I'm a bit nervous about updating the BIOS since I've never done it so tell me what you think.

Here is my system information:
OS: Windows XP Home
Version: 5.1.2600 SP 3
System Manufacturer: NEC Computers International
System Model: EasyNote (Versa E680)
BIOS Version/Date: Insyde Software Corporation R1.01, 6/19/2003
SMBIOS Version: 2.3

I found a BIOS version 1.03 on the net:
VersaE680BIOSv103.ISO (don't know the date)

and the one on the NEC website is 1.07:
Drivers_BIOS_LynxBNEC108V2.exe (5/12/2005)
