Navw32 illegal operation will be shut down

Apr 19, 2004 1:58AM PDT

In the last several days, i have been having a problem with the Norton Antivirus that came with my Norton Systemworks Professional edition 2002. When I scan for viruses, the scan stopped scanning at a certain number of files. It appears to still be scanning files, but the number of files that have been scanned freezes. I run Windows 98SE. Whn I push the "Stop Scan" button on the NAV, I get an error box which says "Navw32, This program has performed an illegal action and will be shut down. I wait for it to shut down, and it doesn't. I am unable to close the error message box or use CTRL+Alt +del to close it. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Norton Systemworks. I don't know how to fix this problem. Can anyone help?

First, get rid of Norton. All of it. As a seasoned professional, I have seen so many computers ruined and slowed through Norton SystemWorks. McAfee is a real pain too.

I sugest AVG Antivirus. I have both Norton and McAfee avaliable to be, but I will pick AVG anyday. It is free and fast. Plus no subscription fees.

Just a question. . .

As a seasoned professional, do you really trust your systems to free software?

I've been using Norton since the late 80s and have never had a problem. What I do find however, is the users either clog their systems with junk, try to do something that just won't work, or don't know how to manage the software. They also won't go to the vendor site for fixes or FAQs.

Granted a system running an NTFS file system is more stable than FAT32, and therefore does not need all the utilities in NSW. I am currently running NSW 2003 (on two home built PCs and one laptop, all running XP Home), but only the AV portion. I don't need all the other fluff. And most people don't either, they just don't know it.

Wayne, as to the question "do you trust your system to free software?". There are very good free programs out there just like there are bad paid ones. Have you stopped using Mozilla? You also told a fib. YOU have had alot of problems with Norton NAV, or have you forgotten. lol
Don't bother to reply. chuck

Kelleigh,

Is your Norton Antivirus have the most current updates? Have you run a spyware removal tool such as the ones at the links below?:

Ad-Aware 6 Spyware Removal Tool

?Spybot Search & Destroy? Spyware Removal Tool

Next, just in case you have a virus which is causing NAV to shut down, please click on the link below and run the free online scan it provides. Delete all infected files it finds:

Trend Micro's Housecall Online Scanner

If it comes up clean, then please try shutting down some of the unnecessary start up programs, and clean out the computer by using the link below. Follow the steps (Parts 1-4), then restart the computer and see if the scan will work this time.

http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6122-0.html?forumID=44&threadID=2966&messageID=35611

(Remember, while shutting down unnecessary start up programs, there are a number of Norton items in "msconfig" that can be disabled and still allow the Norton Antivirus to operate effectively. It's your choice, but many of the items in System Works such as "Utilities" and "CleanSweep" are NOT required programs and they can sometimes cause issues.)

Are the same files causing the "hang"? If so, are you sure they're safe? If so, can you exclude them from the scan? Which files are they and where are they?

Hope this helps.

Yes, My NAV has the latest virus definitions. However, I am running Systemwork 2002. I did recently run Ad-Aware. Would that ccause problems? Should I use a different Spyware removal tool?

I tried downloading Housecall, but got this error message: "Trend Active Update did not update successfully. It may result from a busy server or bad network Traffic. Error Code 28 Error String: Generic Source Network Failure. Retry?"

I retried, but keep getting the same message.

My virus scan problem seemed to be associated with Adobe, so i uninstalled it and reinstalled. I also uninstalled Norton Systemworks, and reinstalled it.

The anti-virus seemed to right itself after two days of malfunctioning. But now I am having wild crazy things going on in my email program (OE).
I called my cable ISP today who told ne I have two viruses. I went to Symantec to get the removal tolls for the Netsky worm and the Beagle virus. After running the removal tools, Symantec says I did not have either. My Internet explorer is acting erratically also. I am ready to scream. Any other advice?

The clue for me is this statement "I am having wild crazy things going on in my email program (OE)."

What may be news to you is that NEW EXPLOITS for OE let pests and parasites which are not stopped by your antivirus (or others) have free reign in you machine.

Let me state that you can not PREVIEW or VIEW all emails or you will be writing more pleas for help.

DO THIS NOW! -> Disable the Preview Pane in all folders for OE.

I'm sorry if this seems to be harsh from me or others, but the world of email has turned very ugly and you have to defend yourself where the antivirus won't.

NEVER view an email from someone you don't know or expect an email from.

----------------------------

About the Spyware scanners. The issue is perverse to some. It's like this, not one scanner finds all the pests and parasites. As such, when I suspect a parasite to have found its way onto a machine, I scan with no less than these four tools -> Spybot, Adaware, Cwshredder and Housecall.

A few will think they don't need all four and the forum members will be nice and not be too pushy about it. But I'll just state it aloud that it's your choice to find and eject the malware and parasites.

As to NAV or AVG, the version you have is not "bad." The 2004 version is glitching for some, so I'd skip that year. As to Free AVG, it's based on the same things as the pay version so it's an option for some.

Happy hunting,

Bob

I just went through the same thing. You need to update
your virus definitions and then run your virus scan.
The message I received after running the scan was:

SACHOST.exe
backdoor.trojan

C:\WINNT\sachost.exe

I can't tell you what this means, but Norton couldn't
delete it until my virus definitions were up to date andthen it removed it.

Thanks, I did update, virus definitions but I was still having the problem. For some reason, after two days the scan ran. My computer is still acting funny in other ways, but Norton says I have no viruses. I highly doubt it. Thanks for your help.

As long as your Norton is paid for use it. It is actually
pretty good (the anti-virus, that is). Systenworks seems to be nothing but a pain. Now to the real problem. Norton
very often will not reinstall right because it didn't uninstall completely, no matter what it said. Do this.
1. Run uninstall.
2. Go to-Start-Settings-Add/Remove software. Check for Anything related to Norton or Systemworks. Click properties and find out what it is. Remove unless it is unrelated.
3. Go to-My Computer-Find. Search for ALL variations of
Norton, System work, etc. Check properties again to be sure, then remove.
4. Empty trash.
5. Run a Registry cleaner if you have it.
6. Reboot
7. Reinstall( I would suggest anti-virus only, but your choice).
Good luck. chuck
