Navigation buttons

First off - apologies if I'm using the wrong terminology. What I'm referring to are those instruction buttons such as 'Open', 'Close' 'Bold', 'Italic' and so on that we have on sites such as Twitter, Wordpress and so on. (On Wordpress, I can see them if I click 'Turn visual editor on'.)

I seem to have lost them on every site that has them and can't work out why. Does this sound like a 'global' problem with my computer/internet settings or specific to certain sites?

Just to try and clarify things more, what I now see - instead of buttons - are references such as 'F2' on top of '01' and so on.

Hope this means something to someone.

Thanks for any help you can give me, and, in computer-speak, please regard me as a bit of a dunce. Happy
