by roc045 / February 9, 2005 1:36 PM PST

when starting win 98 os I get this message in a red screen. I hit ok goes to win 98 setup screen. then goes to page fault explotrer error shutting down. tried to reload 98 says must delete old partion, says does not recognise as ms application. Thought I would then try win 2000 upgrade, says must delete partion to go on. Is my existing files on hard drive damaged or can I salvage them

Something rotten ...

on your hard disk, that's for sure. It totally depends on the situation what can be done, or what should be done. If you're not knowledgeable of using the usual diagnostics (like fdisk /status, chkdsk, scandisk, MS-DOS) you'd better find professional help. Otherwise, go and research.

Hope this helps.

I had the same problem. Mine was caused when spybot search & destroy wanted me to restart so it could remove some spyware. Once I got the error message, I got another saying Explorer was not good, then a empty screen. Windows would not start.

I finally got it fixed by booting to DOS. Then I ran scanreg. I restored a previous registry and all was good.

Hope this helps.
