Cannot help with Norton but suggest as temporary or full time use AVG Free anti-virus from here:
It has auto update and scan if desired. I have used for many months now and with complete satisfaction. You cannot beat the price.
I recently had to have my hard drive reformatted due to failure. The techs said there were several viruses (NAV didn't catch them) but couldn't tell me names. They reinstalled the system and recovered all but one file. They reinstalled the NAV 2002 that came with the system. All Windows XP PRO updates have been applied and the everything seems to be back up to speed, except NAV. Everytime I reboot the system the AutoProtect feature is not enabled. The message window to the right tells me the feature is not installed??? but I click the enable button and it says it is on - until I reboot. This has been happening since reinstallation and the only reason I noticed it is because I went to do a manual scan because of a suspicious e-mail and noticed it was not enabled. Fearing the worst, I did the intelligent updater and installed the current definitions since the live update was not available for 4 days and then ran a scan, nothing. Then after the live update ran and the full system scan ran the next day, it found beagle virus in 3 files, but not on system - it quarantined one and could not delete the other 2. Once again the autoprotect was disabled. I deleted my e-mail trash and then scanned again and no infected files were found. I ran the beagle removal tool just in case and it found nothing. Sorry for the length, but I figured more information was helpful than less. Any help with the autoprotect (Norton no longer supports 2002)? I was hoping to wait until the 2005 stuff came out to upgrade given all the bad press for NIS 2004, not that I necessarily need NIS, NAV will do.
