Narrowing My Focus: Nikon

Jun 26, 2005 10:43AM PDT

I'm a novice photographer looking for a camera with good image quality and good value. I recently stumbled across the Coolpix 7900 review here on CNET and have been interested in purchasing the camera ever since. Does anyone who owns the camera have any helpful input that they can share? Also would it be more prudent for me to wait until the summer is over to purchase the camera in the hopes of a price drop or will prices remain pretty stable? Thanks in advance.

Nikon 7900

There have been a few people, who frequent this forum, report on this camera and I have not heard anything bad.

The sample photos that I have seen are excellent.

The price of this camera is not likely to drop anytime soon.

If you don't really need 7 megapixels, you can save about $90 by buying the 5900. Which is identical to the 7900 except that the 5900 is a 5 megapixel camera.

I've also frequented other camera review sites and have found generally positive reviews for the Fujifilm FinePix E550 as well. Any distinctive traits between the two that would help in head to head comparisons? Any other 7900 owners out there who wouldn't mind sharing their experiences with their camera? Much appreciated

Fujifilm E550

The E550 is a great camera.

It started out to be a "cost reduced" F810.

They went to a plastic body (the F810 was metal) to save money. Then they chose a different but lower cost LCD, which turns out to be better that the one in the F810.

They ended up with a camera that is less expensive to manufacture, that is functionally identical to the F810, and most people feel is superior to the F810.

It also has a full set of manual override controls.
