Naro BackItUp can't recover files

Jun 3, 2005 12:37PM PDT

After seious crashes I had to reformat system and a few external HDs. During this process I lost my Nero backup files. Fortunately, I was able to recover several nbi's. Tried to use recovery from BackItUp and every time I'm getting a message that information file is corrupted. Also, BackItUp doesn't see those files. It must be, I guess, some main file directing to those back ups on other drive that I lost. However, when I'm doing search I'm able to extract specified nbo files except that - same problem. 'Twice clickin on file gives me another message that it can't read it. I'm aware that Nero is using some compression (like zip) scheme but no utility that I know can unzip Nero format. I have a lot of important files in thos nbi's that I lost somewhere else. Is there any way (or utility) to ''unlock'' or/and repair those nbi's? Any other idea? Nero support wasn't helpful at all. I'm also glad from using their product what was their common answer.
Windows XP Pro, NTFS, HD.

You seen to be this weeks poster person about backup programs. I've learned to not use them for just such a reason.

Instead I just backup a zip file or the files to multiple DVDRWs using plain old recorder programs. Very safe.

Very safe indeed and ...

moreover very easy to recover. Just use plain old Windows Explorer to copy the files back on any computer you like.

Nero BackItUp can't recover files

I had a similar problem with Nero BackItUp. It kept complaining about not finding the information file. However, I was able to recover everything by opening the individual files (Highlight 20 or so and press <Enter> or right-click and select Open). It was tedious, but I got all my files back in about an hour or so.

If your files are on removeable media (CD/DVD/ZIP), you may be able to find the .nbi file on the last disk of the backup set.

And one last thing, don't give up on backup software just because Nero is finicky. I consider it free since I bought Nero for burning and BackItUp is just 'bonus' software. The benefit of backuo software (and even BIU) is a) scheduling, b) selective copying with incremental/differential optionsm and c) ability to backup system/registry files. Such functionality is a bit more difficult with XCOPY.
