In short, speed, less power consumption, reduced cost (or more function/speed at the same price).
For the consumer, it's not going to matter that the DVD player is on 1 micron vs. sub-micron dimension chips. The functions and price-tag are what they see.

I always read some tech news about new releases of chips. The chipmakers are presenting new chips with smaller nanometer values and they are really proud of it while doing this. Could you tell, in some simple terms, what do these smaller nanometer values mean to a consumer like me? Is it more speed or anything else?
